Just a couple thoughts…

I will be the first to say the last three years have been tough. Not only here at home office, but with each of you. We have had more heartbreak than one group of friends should have, all the while working through a transition period with a new group of people who came here to help spread Matilda Jane to more homes. For so many years, we lived in our little bubble. A bubble Denise built for us.  A bubble we loved and found purpose in. Heck, we found ourselves in that bubble and made lifelong friends. The hardest part is not that everything has changed, the hardest part is knowing that nothing will ever be what it was. And you know what? That is okay. Seriously, it is!!! You Know why??? It’s okay because we learned from the bubble to accept everyone as they are, even when you disagree, to love when you don’t understand, and to dance yourself silly. We did not learn to hold grudges and hate. We did not learn to judge others, and we certainly did not learn to give up.

Not sure why I just rambled and thought that I needed to give you a pep talk. Maybe because I actually needed one myself. I LOVE Matilda Jane. I love what it stands for. I love the girls I work with each day, and I LOVE that we get to make girls of all ages feel happy and beautiful. I love that we support our community, and I love that we do it together with you. That is why, after many, many late nights of working, I am reminded that there is purpose in what we do each day. There is purpose in the ever-changing personality of Matilda Jane, because when you think about it, she refuses to settle. She is trying to transform into her best self, a self we can all be proud of. A self that holds the values Denise instilled in her. A self that strives to be as creative as Sam and Denise, and a self that above all else will see beauty in the little things.

Truth is, I am happy to see some of the old habits come back. Word on Centennial Drive is that I will be blogging more, and I am super excited about that. Not that I will always be the one who gets to bring a lot of the exciting sneak peaks or contests, but I hope I can bring stories new and old, random thoughts, and a whole lot of LOVE and thankfulness for believing in Matilda Jane through the years.

Which means I also get to share about a WONDERFUL event coming up. An event that Denise and I started three years ago with our dear friend. The event is called Warm and Cozy, and it benefits the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center. I will never forget the first time Denise and I spoke about doing it. We wanted to mix our love of parties and giving back, and boy is Warm and Cozy just that. It’s an event that sounds just like you would think. Outdoor tents on a beautiful rustic farm. Lots of campfires to sit around while listening to live music. We will have homemade s’mores to roast, yummy food and drinks, and the liveliest raffle and live auction. Matilda Jane is donating some wonderful raffle items, such as a custom throw quilt made from vintage Matilda Jane fabric, and a Platinum Experience pass that will allow you time with our Platinum Designer Melissa to design a dress with your daughter for your keeping. This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as goodies are concerned. I really feel it will be the best year yet, and I would love to see some of you there.

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

it feels like the good old days of MJ reading your blog. I love reading about how you are giving back in such big ways. I have always wished I could do big things, but when I start to feel “less than” when I can’t, I am reminded of my favorite quote from the Starfish Story. A boy is throwing starfish into the ocean to save them, and is told that he can’t save them all. He replies, “I made a difference to that one.” When I think of that quote, I am reminded that even one small act can make a difference. Love ya!

Great post, and SO glad we will be hearing more from you Kayla! Many of us have spent years and years following Denise, Sam, and YOU – and we miss you all dearly.

Keeping with the theme of Mr Jobs, here is the one I will share. This has been one I have needed to cling to lately.

“If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking” – Steve Jobs

And another-just because.

“Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.” – unknown

See you soon,

One of my favs is an old school Jewel song that says, “please be careful with me – I’m sensitive and I’d like to stay that way”. Actually, the whole song is quite quotable, including, “maybe if we are surrounded in beauty, someday we will become what we see”, and “anyone can cause a conflict, it’s harder yet to disregard it”…oh heck…just go listen to the song before I quote the whole thing, lol! 🙂
