Every week I wonder if it’s hard for our incredible Trunk Keepers to put it all out there for 50K fans to read. Really, I’m not sure it even occurs to them. They take it all in stride and own it with confidence and grace. Meet our dearest “altruistic Alison”, and just try NOT to love her. I know I do!
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: My name is Alison Spicer. I grew up in the small town of Chesterton, Indiana. I have one younger sister, Jennifer. Growing up I went to a tiny private school, can you believe I only had 9 in my senior class!?!? I went to college in Oklahoma City and then after college I moved to Michigan for a job. After 15 years climbing the corporate ladder I decided to stay home with my babies who came into our lives 4 months apart.
Q: How did you meet and fall for your husband?
A: We met through mutual friends at church. We hung out with the same group of friends for about a year, traveling and doing all kinds of fun things that single professional people do. A great friendship turned to romance. I fell in love with how humble he was and how he really listened to me. Plus, he gets my obsession with shoes and shopping!
Q: Tell us about your beautiful babies.
A: Noah (age 8) is our tender, sweet, athletic boy. Noah was adopted from Russia at the age of 21 months. He is our constant reminder of grace. Isabella (age 5) was our miracle baby that doctors told us would never happen. Bella was born 4 months after Noah came home. Bella is our spunky, smart, fashionista!
Q: Which five words would your friends use to describe you?
A: Loyal, confident, compassionate, generous, loving
Q: Tell us your Matilda Jane story.
A: I met Denise at the Plymouth Art Fair in 2001 when she was selling painted furniture, and painted dresses, before Matilda Jane. This was pre kids for me and I would buy gifts for all my friends babies. I finally had my own baby girl and hosted a MJ trunk show in the first season. Bella had quite the MJ wardrobe stocked away as I had been buying at Art Fair for about 5 years before she was born – just knowing that someday I would have a girl. I just finished my 5th season as an MJ Trunk Keeper.
Q: What do you love most about working for this company?
A: My sister Trunk Keepers. Some of these gals have become such close friends. I wouldn’t be as successful in this business without them! After 5 seasons, I have been through a lot with these gals. I am so excited to see them all at Dress Rehearsal in a few weeks. I also have the most amazing customers. This has been a crazy season for me and my customers have been so understanding – some have even dropped off flowers and meals during these times. WOW – I’m still in awe.
Q: What ambition have you not yet achieved?
A: I always used to dream about owning a childrens book store. I spent most of my childhood with my nose in a book. I was a total bookworm. Not sure this would be the best business model these days so I now spend hours at the local library with my kids.
My current dream is to start or run a non-profit. I have lots of ideas that I’m investigating but they all revolve around orphans and children in foster care and helping these children find forever families.
Q: What is your favorite movie of all time?
A: Easy One – “A Walk To Remember”! I prefer to read the books and always think the movies ruin the books but this one I loved!
Q: What motto do you live by?
A: In high school I read this poem and it really struck home, “I went out to find a friend and did not find one there, I went out to BE a friend and friends were everywhere”. I have been blessed with the most wonderful friends who have been so supportive in my times of need and can only hope that I am this amazing a friend to them as well!
Q: Who would play YOU in a movie about your life?
A: Reese Witherspoon would make my day!
Q: If you could have one wish granted, what would it be?
A: I would love to live in the same town and my sister and my parents. I want Noah and Bella to know their grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins. I miss those days of Sunday family dinner where everyone comes over and the kids just run around playing.
Q: Who are you most inspired by?
A: My parents. 42 years of marriage, they have taught me so much about life, love, and compassion.
Q: What is something you loved or collected as a young girl? For me, it was unicorns!!
A: Strawberry Shortcake Dolls. Love that Bella is collecting her own now. My mom pulled out all my old dolls at Christmas and we had so much fun playing with them together.
Q: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A: A day on the beach with nothing more to do than relax and spend time with my family!
That sounds just about right to me. Does it get any better than family time with not a care in the world?
Thanks for sharing your world with us, Alison! You are a love, with a heart of warmth that radiates. Can’t wait to hear how you make your non-profit dreams come true! Keep us posted.
