Candid Keeper {#364}

I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Amy Brown via Skype this week and let me tell you, she is as funny as she is gorgeous.

Au Natural and completely oozing with charm, her passion for family and Matilda Jane

make her a perfect fit.

So, sit back and get to know the ins and outs of one of Matilda Jane’s gems.

Q:  Let’s start with some basic information about you, Amy.

A:  Okay, my name is Amy Brown and I live in Grass Valley which is where I’ve lived since about 6th grade.  I’m married to Steve Brown and have 3 children, Ella Brown (6), Charlotte Brown (4) and Hudson Brown (4).  I just turned 30!!  So, I’m freaking out a little bit about that.  It’s so bizarre not to be in my 20’s anymore.

Q:  How did you meet your husand?

A:  Oh gosh, I don’t know if this is the right question for a Matilda Jane blog.  {laughing!!!}  No, it was actually really funny.  Steve’s friends kept trying to get him to go out one night and he kept trying to blow them off, while on the other side of town, my friends were trying to get me to go out.  I was working retail and had to work late.  I didn’t want to go out either, but in the end we were both pressured into it.  He came up to me and offered me a drink and I was like, “ummm, no thanks.” (I really didn’t want to be there.)  My friends thought I was crazy.  They kept saying “What? Are you crazy?  He’s so cute!!”

So, we have a drink and it sounds nuts, but one week later, I called my Mom and told her this was the man I was going to marry.  We hadn’t even talked but I knew that he was the one.  In the end, we were engaged one month later.  Now we’ve been married for 7 years!!

Q:  Tell me about your kids and their personalities.

A:  Well, let’s see.

Ella is my 6 year old and she is just SO sweet and caring.  She’s one of those kids that if you could mold the perfect child, she’s IT.  Outgoing, fun, smart, athletic.  She’s so much fun.

Charlotte is my little “firecracker.”  She looks identical to me, but she is WAY smarter than I am.  😉  She is also a sweetheart but definitely has an opinion about everything!!

Hudson is ALL boy.  200%!!  He loves to get dirty and play rough.  He’s totally outgoing and has endless energy.

Q:  How has being a parent changed you?

A:  Oh gosh.  I was such a workaholic before I had kids.  I was a visual merchandising and design manager that worked 60-70 hours a week.  I had a lot of responsibility but I just made the best of it.  Work was definitely all I focused on.  Now that I have kids, all of my time goes to them.  I guess I traded one passion for another.  😉

Q:  Tell me how you became a Trunk Keeper.

A:  It’s kind of a funny story.  I was standing in line at Nordstrom’s when this random lady in front of me started telling me how cute my girls are and she asked if I had ever heard of Matilda Jane.  I had NEVER heard of it which was so surprising because I LOVE clothes and I was totally on the “up and up” of what was hip.  😉

She actually invited me to her home which was about 2 hours away from me so I wasn’t able to make it.  But, I got online and of course I FELL IN LOVE.  That was just this last October!  I hosted my own show and Shannon (my TK) and I just really hit it off.  It was the week before Christmas and Shannon called me to ask if I wanted a job.  I was like “WHAT?”  So, the week before Christmas I was running around filling out paperwork and doing interviews.  It was so crazy, but here I am.

Q:  Last week I held a contest where I picked two readers to choose a question for our Candid Keeper spot.  Amanda Wood wants to know if you feel like you are cheating on MJ when you put your kids in something else.

A:  Absolutely not.  We live in the mountains and I literally had a foot of snow yesterday.  My girls wear Matilda Jane 99% of the time, but sometimes it’s just not conducive to where we live and the weather.  I definitely mix and match depending on what we are doing.  I definitely pair MJ shirts with jeans a lot.

Q:  Besides the birth of your children, what was the happiest moment of your life?

A:  I would have to say it was when my husband asked me to marry him.  Knowing that he was “the one” so early on and having him confirm it by asking me to marry him just completed everything.  I was in my early 20’s and I’d been dating a bunch of “losers”  (laughing) so it was an incredible moment for me to find him and know I was going to be with him forever.

Q:  Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

A:  Definitely my Mom.  I go to her with everything.  Without my Mom, I’m not sure what I would do.  She was a stay at home Mom forever and she just has so much wisdom and kindness in her soul.  She always seemed to make all the right decisions.  Literally, every thing I know comes from her.  She is the first person I run to for anything.  Sick kids, wounds etc.  😉

Q:  How would you like to be remembered?

A:  I would say I’d like to be remembered as a good Mom.  I’d like to be remembered as a loving, caring person who put her family first.

Q:  So, Rachelle K. wants to know, if you could live one year of your life over again, which year would that be and why.

A:  Oh man!!  You know, I would have to say the first year of being married.  Because……..I got pregnant 6 months after we got married and while I adore my kids and would never take it back, I would love to have that first full year to just be married to be able to focus on us.

Q:  If your house caught fire and you could save only one thing, what would that be?

(Besides your kids)

A:  I would definitely run straight to this box that holds all of my cd’s of photos of my kids, our wedding, special keepsakes, a rosary that my grandmother gave me etc.  It’s basically a fire box.  (laughing)  So, I guess I’m already prepared.

Q:  What is your greatest fear?

A:  This is a bad question, because I’m SO paranoid, but my greatest fear is something happening to my family.  My biggest fear is anything that is outside of my control that I can’t fix.

Q:  What is your wildest dream?

A:  It might sound silly, but having financial freedom to where my husband didn’t have to work and we could all just travel and see the world together.  No bills, no responsibilities, no school.  Just to go and live your life and travel!

Q:  What do you value most in friendships?

A:  I would say flexibility.  I am so consumed by my kids, my husbands business, now Matilda Jane that I don’t have a lot of time to devote to friends.  I have a few really great ones that understand how busy life can be and we can go weeks without talking, but it doesn’t make a difference.  They understand.

So, you’re saying you need friends that are “low maintenance.”

Exactly!!!  But, I do love my friends and they know I would drop everything to be there for them at any moment.

Q:  What inspires you to want to be better?

A:  Definitely my family.  I think before I do most things, they are the people I run it by.  I am so inspired to eat healthy and organically because of my kids.  I’m inspired to recycle and take care of our planet because of my kids and my grandkids and my great-grandkids.

Q:  What are your 2 most favorite blogs?

A:  I just love Amy Atlas.  She is the starter of the desert table and she plans amazing events.  I love parties and planning so that is definitely one of my favorites.

The other one is Dreamy Whites and it’s all about taking old, vintage items and turning them into something new and beautiful.  I just recently became addicted to antique shopping.  😉

Q:  What do you do for fun?

A:  Oh gosh, I’m a shopaholic, but let’s see, what do I do?????  With 3 kids and owning your own business, it’s kind of hard to find time for yourself.  But I would have to say antique shopping is my thing.  I head out at 5 am and shop all day surrounded by these old things that all have a story.  My husband just loves when I come home with a car full of “crap.”  (insert sarcasm)  I have 3 chairs that are sitting in my garage that I still haven’t refinished and I think he’s worried I’m becoming a hoarder.  {Laughing}

Q :  Chocolate or Vanilla?

A:  Definitely Chocolate!
