Candid Keepers #367

Amy Harden of Cumming, GA

Most valued form of character:

Integrity.  Hands down!

Q:  Please tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from and where are you now?

A:  I’m a born and raised Georgia girl! I am from Marietta, GA – went to the University of Alabama – “Roll Tide!” and now live with my handsome hubby and 2 precious children in Cumming, GA!

Q:  How did you meet and fall in love with your husband?

A:  Well, its kind of a long story and if my husband was here he would interrupt, tell you I include too many details and just “get to the point!” But it is a fun story and I love to tell it. So here goes the short and sweet version. It was the summer of Freshman year of High School and I was at a mutual friends house hanging out when 2 very cute guys knocked on the door to tell us about a party. We decided to check it out. I drove us all and one of the cute boys asked for my number but never heard from him (ouch). Years go by and I’m a Sophomore at Alabama when the Olympics come to town and I decide to head back home for awhile. Some friends and I hit a local hang out when I notice this really cute guy nearby. I mention he’s cute to my friend Jonathan who just so happens to know him! I leave to use the restroom and upon my return, the cute guy is sitting in my seat! Oh great. We chat a bit and then leave. No numbers exchanged. Bummer. But my friend Jonathan assures me he will call him and hook us up. The very next day I’m out shopping with my Mom and I phone home to see if “anyone” had called. “Yes, a guy named Mark”. I frantically respond, “did he leave his number?!” He did and I couldn’t wait to call him back. I did right there from the Rich’s Department Store register (no cell phone era). He asked me out for the very next day. Nice. Three dates later, I ask him “So I guess Jonathan gave you my number?” Not exactly. “Remember Freshman year in High School when you drove me to that party?” It was him! Then I asked “Why didn’t you ever call me?” HaHa! (He said he did but nobody answered -likely story.) Regardless, he had held on to the tiny piece of paper for six years! I call that fate. We have been together 16 years and married 11. He is my best friend and I could not have found a more perfect soul mate and father to our children!

Q:  We’d love to know more about the little people in your world.  Do share.

A:  Well, I have a very smart, funny, outgoing, creative, active, sweet and handsome 8 year old son Drew! He keeps things interesting and very fun! I could tell you all kinds of funny stories! Then there is my six year old Sassy, Smart, Funny, Big Hearted, Sweet, Girly Girl Avery, who definitely gives this mama a run for her money! She is a total Daddy’s girl, which I can totally understand.

Q:  What did you do in your previous life? Pre-Matilda Jane?

A:  What haven’t I done? Ha! I love to be doing something, often times too many things – I earned my degree in Interior Design so I often help design and decorate friends homes. I sold Southern Living at HOME for gosh, 10 years – that was fun and a great move considering I met one of my best friends!

Q:  How did Matilda Jane find YOU?

A:  My friend & amazing photographer Stacy Collins called one day and said “You have got to come see these amazing clothes made by Matilda Jane – they are unique and totally different than what they have out there for girls and it is totally you!” Sign me up! I drove pretty far to see these “unique clothes” and I am so glad I did! I bought 1 outfit that night and hosted my own show, which I have been having every season since 2007!

Q:  Who on this earth has been the number one influence in your life?

A:  My Mom – she is very wise and taught me to live life to the fullest! I go to her for everything and couldn’t imagine live without her! Especially her parenting advice – she raised 4 kids (all basically a year apart!) She is the person I call for anything and everything!

Q:  What are 5 words your friends would use to describe you?

A:  Outgoing, Positive, Trustworthy, Generous, Funny

Q:  Besides your family, what are you most passionate about?

A:  I love photography and design. Pretty much anything where I can channel my creativity! I frequent my friend’s fantastic design blog Vreeland Road to get all the latest design tips and inspirations.

Q:  Chocolate or Vanilla?

A:  Vanilla

Q:  Are you a dreamer or a realist?

A:  Definitely a dreamer!

Q:  Crazy or not, what is one dream that you would most like to make come true?

A:  My daughter (who is 6) wants to go to Paris (I know, where in the world did she get that idea? Barbie probably) – But, I would love to take her there and make her dream come true!

Q:  If you were gifted $1 million to donate to any charity or organization, which one would you choose? Why?

A:  Children’s Cancer research. To help find a cure for Childhood Cancer, because no Child or Parent should ever have to deal with that!

Q:  If you could crawl into the pages of any book, what would it be and why?

A:  I would have to say any of the Dr. Seuss books – Those are some wild and crazy stories and I would love to be a part of the genius mind of Dr. Seuss.

Q:  Are you a country mouse or city mouse?

A:  I would have to say country mouse with a little city mouse too! – I love that I have the best of both worlds living close to Atlanta!

Q:  If you could have Denise design ANY item for Matilda Jane, what would that be and why?

A:  Definitely a bedding line – How stinking adorable would that be in a little girls room!!

Q:  Lastly, in the spirit of Heart~Soul~Pride, what in your opinion is the most important form of character?

A:  Integrity. Hands down!

You have a beautiful family and I love your pictures! I would have to agree about the need to focus on childhood cancer. I have been following Lane Goodwin and his battle with cancer and was shocked that less than one percent of money raised for the American Cancer Society is used for childhood cancer research. Lane just lost his battle at the age of 13, but his dream is to bring awareness and find a cure.
