UPDATE: The Character Counts mouse pad and Serendipity Puzzle have been added to Platinum to help Sara’s family! All proceeds from the mouse pad will go to Sara’s family, and $10 from each Serendipity Puzzle will also! Thank you so much for being apart of this, you have no idea how much this means to us at Matilda Jane, let alone Sara’s family. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

ALSO! Here is a link where you can learn more information on how to donate to this family.

I don’t even know how to begin this post. I guess I’ll begin with life can certainly be unpredictable.

Last Thursday one of my dear friends, one of our Trunk Keepers, Sara Spitler’s daughter and two young nieces were in a car accident. Her brother’s girlfriend,  Katie M. Atkins, was also present in the accident, but wasn’t able to make it. Audrey, Sara’s daughter, was luckily able to walk away from the car accident, while her two nieces Neilah and Jaidyn were flown to separate hospitals. Jaidyn was released from Riley Hospital yesterday and is on the road to recovery, but Neilah is still hospitalized in Chicago with extensive global brain damage. Neilah is showing signs of improvement as of today and we have high hopes of seeing this darling girl’s smile soon. We are all hoping for a birthday miracle, Neilah turns 8 years old this Saturday (tomorrow!).

I can’t even begin to express my feelings for this terrible event. Not only is Sara one of my good friends, but she’s one of the most amazing woman I’ve ever met. So strong, so confident, and so so genuine. I’ve learned and grown from this woman, whether she was teaching me a lesson while driving to work (yes she used to pick me up everyday!) or giving me my first job, and then getting me my job at MJC. She’s been a crucial part of me growing up, and has been a constant beacon of guidance and support for me over the past 7 years. I’ve said countless times that I want to grow up and be like Sara, and to this day I still do.

Audrey, Neilah, and Jaidyn are the kind of cousins that I never had. They are absolute best friends. Being around them makes you feel…youthful and bright. When I would babysit them, I would think about how lucky they would feel one day to have each other. To have that closeness, an almost sister like bond; it’s priceless. Priceless and beautiful.

For the love of all the sisters, angels, lovers, cousins, and mothers we need to do something for this family. We need to become stronger for them. We need to send prayers, thoughts, wishes, and hope to them. We need to share the love, and spread it even further because Sara is a part of our family.

Here it is, the “Charity Dress” we’ve been holding our breath, just waiting to show you it. We’ve had them in boxes in our warehouse for nearly a year now, but haven’t had the right moment to share them. We knew all along it would be for a good cause, but we had no idea it would be for a member of our own MJC family.

The Neilah dress will be sold for $48 on Platinum with $25 of the proceeds going to Sara and her family.

This adorable mouse pad featuring a little cutie wearing the Fall Character Counts collection will also be added to Platinum for $5 with all proceeds going to Sara and her family.

Please keep these girls, this family, close to your heart. Thank you.

What a horrible thing for all these families to have to go through! I lived in Westville IN for awhile, and know that road too well. I missed the dress, but will keep these children and their families in my thoughts and prayers, for those lost and for those who need support in recovering!

Elisabeth - July 28, 2012 - 8:59 am

Thoughts and prayers for her recovery

Kristin - July 28, 2012 - 5:53 am

I could not find the dress on the website either. I have a 5 year old and a 2.5 year old I’d like to purchase it for. Please send me a link to the actual dress to purchase. God Bless!

Laura shigley - July 27, 2012 - 6:44 pm

I’m praying for the families and the hands of all the specialists involved in Neilah’s road to recovery! She is a beautiful girl!

Audra - July 27, 2012 - 6:19 pm

Please everyone remember the Atkins family during this time as well. While grown, Katie was their little girl and her loss is profound for that family.

Marissa Brim - July 27, 2012 - 4:02 pm

Katie was my cousin, and yes, she did not survive the crash. When the first responders arrived, she was conscious enough to ask them to take care of the girls. She passed away shortly thereafter. While our family is saddened by this lose, we are fervently praying for a speedy recovery for Jaidyn, and praying for more miracles with Neilah. I cannot wait to meet the two little girls Katie thought of as her own daughters. I am immediately placing an order for my 3 year old daughter and 5 year old niece.

Beautiful dress- so fitting to support such a beautiful girl. Sending all the love and support in the world to this amazing family. I am so thankful to have them in my life. And Sam, I want to be like Sara when I grow up, too! 🙂

Jill Nielsen - July 27, 2012 - 10:53 am

charlotte - July 27, 2012 - 10:46 am

Prayers for this family and these sweet children. I was unable to buy a dress as they must already be sold out but would love to donate some money for this family if a link could be provided. Thanks MJ for doing things like these – once again such a heart of gold!

Mande - July 27, 2012 - 10:45 am

Praying for these beautiful girls and their families. This is so heartbreaking.

Vanessa - July 27, 2012 - 10:33 am

Love that the dress did so well. It is an amazing cause and I hope that loads of money has been raised already for this family.

I will be saying prayers, sending love and healing thoughts to that beautiful, strong little girl and her family.

Patti - July 27, 2012 - 10:20 am

How do we order?

Chaney Gipson - July 27, 2012 - 9:49 am

I ask my Maddison if she liked this dress, and I could tell by the look on her face that she was not really into it. So then I said here is why I want to get you this dress. I told her about Neliah, how she is in the hospital, how it cost lots of money. By the time I was finished explaining Maddison had a huge smile on her face. Her exact words as she puts her hair behind her ear shyly, “mom I really want to do that”. This piece will not just be “another” dress. So much meaning behind it. Thanks MJC, ALWAYS thinking of others!!

Sara - July 27, 2012 - 9:49 am

I’m praying with all of my heart for Neilah and her family. What a wonderful thing for MJC to do for them. Love you guys!!!

Nesha Thompson - July 27, 2012 - 9:18 am

My heart is broken for Sara’s family. I pray that they are all able to make a full recovery. Thank you for showing your HUGE heart and providing us all with an opportunity to help!

Kelly mathias - July 27, 2012 - 9:17 am

What a beautiful way to honor these beautiful little girls! I know and dearly love both grandmas and feel like the stories they have shared over the years bring me close to these girls. I can’t wait to order a size 8 as soon as its ready!!!

Bekki - July 27, 2012 - 9:05 am

Love this family so much. I lost a piece of my heart that day when Sara told me the news. I have been fortunate to have crossed paths with the spitler family and words cannot even express what a genuine, kind hearted person Sara is. If ever any person needed your prayers, your good vibes, your positive thoughts it’s this family.

Jennifer Olenick - July 27, 2012 - 8:40 am

My thoughts and prayers are with her family! Reminds me of how short life is and that we should enjoy every second with our loved ones.

Thank you Sam!

WhitleyKate'sMom - July 27, 2012 - 7:55 am

This story absolutely breaks my heart. It is such a reminder that our lives can change in an instant. While heartbreaking, this is what makes me love Matilda Jane. You reach out to people whether it be spreading the love or selling this dress to raise money for this sweet family. I feel blessed to be able to hug all three of my children, and to know that my son will be home with me tomorrow on the day he shares a birthday with Neilah. As we celebrate having him 16 wonderful years, I will be in constant prayer for this sweet girl who is going to spend her birthday in the hospital. Thank you Sam for this amazing and heartfelt blog post, and thank you for allowing us to help this family. There will definitely be many prayers lifted for them.
