Like a Graceful Swan

The first release of Hello, Lovely! is tomorrow, and we couldn’t be more excited. We know that you’ll fall in love with the soft colors, beautiful patterns, and fresh designs just like we have. To introduce the collection, here are a few words from Denise DeMarchis, MJ’s founder, on her inspiration for Hello, Lovely!

When I was 15, I went to San Francisco to meet one of my dearest friends. It was the first time I had flown alone and the first time I went to the West Coast. The air force base we stayed at, the hip crowd in Santa Cruz, and all the Volkswagen buses I saw had me at “hello.”
One crystal clear memory sticks out in my head from that trip. It is the vision of my Great Aunt Althea and her husband dancing in a hotel lobby. Funny the things you remember. We made a weekend trip up to Petaluma to visit my aunt. She met us at a grand historical hotel for lunch. We walked in and gasped. We were in awe of the marble floors, the high ceilings, and the clean plastered walls that hung with beautiful art work. But still, it was the sight of my aunt gracefully dancing while holding her dress as her husband swirled her around that remains crystal clear.
When Sam and I sat down to design the Spring 2015 line, I knew I wanted flowing, smooth, beautiful colors, almost like a clear lake on a spring day. Or that hotel lobby. I also knew I wanted this collection to feel as graceful as my Aunt Althea looked that day.
Everyone knows my grandma has always been near and dear to me. She was as elegant as a ballerina. Her was skin was smooth as glass.  And so was her sister, my great aunt Althea. Without trying, I always end up having a design reminiscent of my grandparents and my memories with them. Always. I guess it shows what I’ve always known; they’re a huge part of who I am.
In the Hello, Lovely! collection, it is definitely the swans that symbolize the ones I love. The graceful yet strong silhouette of the swan; it is my grandma and her sister who will sweep you away at first sight or perhaps on the ballroom floor. And it is the fabric in the Beautiful Swan Knot dress that I hope will sweep you off your feet and have your little one dancing across the living room floor.

Love hearing about your inspiration for this line. Simply gorgeous. Kudos to you and Sam for making grandma and Aunt Althea proud! It’s your swan song….

Thank you for sharing a piece of Denise’s heart. This is such a big part of why our community is what it is. I cannot wait to see Payton Jo twirl around, and will fondly think of those in my life who have gone before us. My Mom always said one of her greatest treasures was watching me perform in ballets, and now she can watch my little girl from above. Cheers to a beautiful release, and celebrating our beautiful community. Treasures all around!

The words you wrote are very sweet. I think we all need a little more sweet in our lives. I think it is important to hang on to those sweet moments of life locking them into our memories, for those rainy days that are not so sweet.

I’m loving the colors of this line, and I’m a sucker for the sentimental moments that inspire. It’s so great to hear from you, Denise!

I love that memory Denise. I have so many vivid memories of my grandmother too, who was equally as lovely as you have described yours. I had almost forgotten but your words brought me back…my grandma had the most velvety skin too. I remember thinking that every time I kissed her. She has been gone 11 years and not a day goes by I don’t think of her.

So lovely…your mind is ( hey, that sounds like Yoda…can you tell I have a 7 year old boy?) 😉

I liked this collection from the moment I heard the name! I love the word “lovely” & find it is far under used & under appreciated these days. To me it evokes a time gone by, sipping iced tea on the front porch on a summer afternoon, grace, beauty, elegance. And these peeks, the colors & prints, they are all of those things! I can’t wait to see the full collection!! Thank you, Denise & Co!

In the midst of parenting, long afternoons, homework checklists, spelling bees, preschool meltdowns, the rewards and the penalties for all the little decisions I make as a momma that always seem to connect to larger ones, I sometimes daydream about the future. Will my children be proud of me? Will we always be this close? Will they bring *their* children to see me? I hope my someday grandchildren are half as impressed with me as you are with yours. What a legacy.

Isn’t it amazing how our fondest memories can inspire us so much. Reading this post made me recall memories with both my grandmothers. It’s like I can vividly remember the beautiful smells of their gardens. Love.absolutely love this!

I am so happy to have stumbled across this very different little clothing company @ 8 years ago!

I have traveled and lived all around the world. My home is an eclectic collection of “memories”. Each item in my crazy crowded house is a simple reminder of a story – an event – a special occasion- a outing with a friend – or a simple discovery. The stories are ALWAYS the most important part!

I love – absolutely love – that when I dress my girls in MJ, there is a story to go with each of these beautiful, sweet, conservative, and colorful little frocks! You best believe that I will share the story of your Grandma and your Great Aunt with Abby and Lilli as we unpack our first box of Hello, Lovely items!

Thanks for sharing Denise!
