October 2020 Collection Inspiration

Get ready to say hello to October! September is one of our favorite months of the year, which can make it hard to say goodbye. However, our October release is so exciting that we’re happily leaping to the next month! We sat down with Design Director, Meagan Miller, to chat all things October from where she drew inspiration to her favorite styles.

MJC: What inspired you for the October release?

Meagan Miller: “I really love texture and all things cozy. October is always the perfect month to introduce warm sweaters and textured knits like waffle and ribs. We often think about the things we are doing with our friends and family during the fall months, like apple picking, going to pumpkin patches and maybe having a bonfire on a cool night — but this October we were inspired by what takes place inside the home. What do you do after the apple farm? Bake a pie. Can some jelly. We just loved all the memories we shared amongst the team from our personal childhoods during this time. It was very inspiring.”

October Inspiration

MJC: Tell us a little about the color palette!

MM: “I personally love this color palette so much. It’s happy and girly, with touches of earth tones that offer a bit of softness and richness at the same time. I just adore how the pink and turquoise pair with the rusty brown and ochre. It certainly reminds me of the leaves changing as we transition from summer to fall and the beauty within that.”

MJC: So pretty! Can you tell us about any extra special details incorporated into the patterns?

MM: “Yes! The Sweetie Pie Dress and Best Recipe Dress have an actual pie recipe on the skirt. Baking a pie as a child with my mom was something I loved doing. To this day, we still share that bonding moment the night before Thanksgiving every year.”

MJC: That’s so sweet — we love that! How is this October different from previous releases?

MM: “You will see an introduction of a lot of textured fabrics like waffle knits, chiffon swiss dots and crinkle gauzes. There are also a lot of cozy pieces compared to prior months as we transition into winter.”

MJC: Which girls’ style is your favorite from this release?

MM: “The Forever and Ever Dress — I can not wait to see little girls running and twirling in this one. It is super soft, has a slight texture and an incredibly full skirt for that perfect twirl moment. This dress is where pink meets the rusty brown hue in the most magical way. It doesn’t get any better!”

MJC: Lastly, which women’s style are you most excited to wear?

MM: “I love the Botanical Beauty Top for its beautiful print and color. There are so many stylish ways to wear it — with jeans or a great legging, depending on your occasion!”

#GoGold for Childhood Cancer

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and we are so thrilled to collaborate with the American Childhood Cancer Organization for the third year to bring awareness to this inspiring non-profit. At Matilda Jane we put heart and purpose into every single piece we create, so partnering with the American Childhood Cancer Organization is something we hold very near to us. Each day we strive to inspire and empower every little girl wearing our designs, and with the help of the ACCO, we are able to do just that.

We stand united with the ACCO in the fight against childhood cancer, and to honor that, today we are releasing a curated collection of Platinum styles, available for a limited time through September 30. This mission began two years ago with the release of the Beautiful Bennett Knot Dress, designed in memory of a courageous two year old and her fight with cancer. This year, the curated GO GOLD collection is presented to commemorate the international awareness color for childhood cancer. The assortment of gold themed designs, matched to personality and style, will delight all little girls as they are worn in support of ACCO. For each item purchased, proceeds will be donated by Matilda Jane to the ACCO to advance specific research for pediatric cancer treatment.

Even though the photo session was modified this year due to COVID-19, these beautiful children shined ever so brightly. Each photo shoot was private to ensure safety, yet, offered the opportunity for each girl to twirl, dance and sparkle. These little models are amazing and beautifully embody the spirit of this mission in their symbolic dresses and outfits. There are so many brave children who show unmatched courage and strength as they journey through their battle, and our thoughts and prayers go out to every one of them. Be sure to join us at matildajaneplatinum.com through September 30 to shop our special GO GOLD curated collection from Platinum and support the fight against childhood cancer.

Our Awesome, Printable Fall Bucket List

Happy fall, y’all! Although we’ve had glimpses of fall weather the past few weeks, it’s officially autumn today! There are so many things we love about fall from the scents and flavors (hello, pumpkin everything) to the crisp morning air and that euphoric feeling you get at the turn of a new season. There’s just something inherently cozy about autumn that makes us want to wrap up in our comfiest cardigan and drink hot cider. Can you relate?

Every year is a little different, but the one constant we can expect from every fall is that it is fleeting. Summer and winter seem to last so long and fall tends to be a quick little bridge between the two, so we like to make the most out of each and every day of this autumnal season. Make the most of your fall with our awesome (and printable) fall bucket list!

1. Go apple picking

Is there a more quintessential fall activity than apple picking? Apple picking is a fun activity for the whole family. Spend the afternoon walking the orchard, picking apples and riding the hay ride! When you get home, whip up a quick batch of homemade applesauce.

2. Paint pumpkins

Make your own fall décor this year by painting pumpkins! You can get pumpkins from the patch or the grocery store and the rest of your supplies at the craft store. There are so many neat designs you can create from buffalo checks and florals to cable-knit and textured designs. When you’re done, arrange your pumpkins by the fireplace or on your doorstep! This is a great craft for a girls’ night or to do with the kiddos. Get tips for pumpkin painting here.

3. Go to the farmer’s market

The only thing we love more than going to the summer farmer’s market is going to the fall farmer’s market! There is something so nostalgic about sipping hot cocoa while picking up produce (and maybe some fresh pumpkin pastries). Some fall markets even have handmade goods and crafts to add to your fall home décor. The perfect start to your Saturday!

4. Try a new soup recipe

The unofficial start to fall is whenever you make your first slow cooker soup! The moment the weather drops below 70°, we are ALL IN on soup season. Soups are the staple meal of fall — they’re the best comfort food on a chilly day and they make tons of leftovers. Need some recipe inspiration? Here are 15 slow cooker soups for fall! Tip: plan ahead and pick up some of your veggies and herbs at the farmer’s market!

5. Hike with the family

Our favorite kind of family activity is one spent in the great outdoors! Spend your Sunday afternoon going on a family hike. Find a nearby trail (or park) and pack up a backpack with water and snacks for the afternoon. We can’t think of a better way to get a little exercise in while spending time with those we love most!

6. Have a Halloween movie marathon

Whether you’re a scary movie fanatic or not, it wouldn’t be fall without a little Halloween movie marathon! Pick out a few favorites, grab your coziest throw blanket (and yummiest snacks) and dive right in. Here’s a list of kid-friendly Halloween movies to get you started.

7. Make homemade hot chocolate (with a fall twist)

Move over summer lemonade, it’s time for our fave drink of fall to shine! The best way to step up your hot chocolate is to make it yourself. There are so many twists to take your hot cocoa to the next level, but this pumpkin white hot chocolate sounds too good to pass up!

8. Update your family photos

Needing some updated family photos? Fall is truly the best time of year to snap some new family pictures. The gorgeous fall foliage makes the best backdrop for capturing special family moments. We have adorable, coordinating mommy & me options perfect for family photos. Shop here.

9. Bake pumpkin bread

Would it be fall if you didn’t bake pumpkin bread? (The answer is no, it would not be.) Pumpkin is THE flavor for fall and pumpkin bread is the ultimate fall treat. This delicious fall favorite is a crowd pleaser, perfect to enjoy as a family or to gift to friends, family or even teachers! Here is an easy, one-bowl pumpkin bread recipe.

10. Tailgate in your own backyard

Football season may look a little different this year, but you can still have just as much fun tailgating at home! Fire up the slow cooker, whip up your favorite bite-size snacks, set up the cornhole in your backyard and enjoy the best things about tailgating, all from the comfort of your own home.
