Did anyone see where August went? I swear I remember the beginning of the month, but where did the middle and the end go? Time, man. I’ll never wrap my head around it. A day can last forever, but a month can pass by in the blink of an eye. How does it do that??
I’ll put these existential thoughts aside to focus on the real reason I’m wondering where August went… today is September 1st! And you know what that means; an exciting new release of Secret Fields is here! I can’t wait to hear what you think of it. I’ve been reading all the comments on sneak peeks so far, but I never truly feel it until you all get your hands on the items at trunk shows. I’m sure that’s how you feel too, right?
In Release Two, you’ll see lots of new styles and some old favorites, too. They’re designed in a slew of cheery colors with happy, hopeful thoughts in mind. Every piece makes me smile and reminds me of a certain conversation or trip that helped to create it. Because, as I’m sure you know, every item has a story. Every. Single. One. If you had a few hours, I could tell you the ideas, the locations, the jokes, and, heck, even the weather that happened while the design was created! But, if you asked me what my best friend’s phone number is… well, I’d scratch my head and back away quietly. My memory is funny like that. I either remember everything or nothing at all. For now, maybe I should share just one?
Or two. Oh, you know I can never choose a FAVORITE, because I love them all! This little beauty, however, has stolen a nice chunk of my heart. Denise and I designed the Citronella Dress at her home in Indiana, sitting at the same red table we’ve been looking at for years. We wanted to capture the femininity of the women’s Fairest Navy Dress from Paint by Numbers while keeping it bright and playful for your sweet darling daughters. The end result is a dress that’s so comfy you could mistake it for a soft knit lap dress, but with extra bells and whistles that truly make it shine. This super special, cozy dress is exactly how I see Fall – still bright, like the sun is just setting, but with cool blues that say “Winter IS on its way, you know.”
And the second.. Does anyone remember Teacake from You&Me? My VERY first collection that I designed with Denise from start to finish? Well… there was something about looking back to You&Me that really helped me move forward with Secret Fields. I’m sure for a million sentimental reasons, but also because it felt like we really started taking design to the next level with You&Me. And that’s what I want us to keep doing! Evolving our designs, while keeping in mind the gorgeous classics that helped build MJC into what it is today. And hey, I’m calling the Blue Orchid Crochet Sara Top a classic, folks!
Secret Fields has given me an encyclopedia of memories to hold on to. How lucky am I? I get to design sweet, beautiful items, and also build the most rewarding memories at the same time?
One of the biggest memories is Kayla’s and my trip to visit Denise in Houston. What an inspiring place to dive into Release 2. Not just the city, although Houston was so very nice and SO very hot! But… being with Denise and Kayla, who are both SOOOO different, yet two of my absolute best friends and favorite style icons. And being told to shop, shop, shop (David gave Denise permission to spoil the bejeezus out of us! As if she needed his permission. 😉 ) opened my mind to about a million new possibilities. Being at the forefront of the collection for the very first time, I really decided to go for it. I made it my own and hoped to goodness that Denise and the team would love it as much I did.
Long story short and a few meetings later, we added the second release to Secret Fields and while doing so, turned another page in the story of Matilda Jane. Turned another page in the story of Sam, too. And if you’re anything like me, I can’t wait to see/read/feel what happens next.
Enjoy, my friends!
