Can you Keep a Secret?

Sometimes I just can’t. And if Gabe could read I would be in big trouble. So here is how it plays out….

Upstairs GABE: Mom, HELP (crying)

Downstairs ME: What Gabe? Come down if you need me.

Upstairs GABE: MOM!!!! I need you….

Downstairs ME: What Gabe? Come down if you need me.

REPEAT ABOUT 3-4x

Upstairs GABE: Please mom, just come up, I really need you (crying still, and I am not a bad mom, he just cries a lot, okay screams a lot)

ME: Okay, I am coming…(I find Gabe handcuffed to the bracket underneath his footstool) It’s okay Gabe, I can cut them off, we’ll figure out.

Gabe: Just go in my closet and the key is in my box of weapons. (crying)

End of story..But I just got to know, do all 5yr old keep a box of weapons in their closet? Is this normal? And I am saying this seriously. Weapons being swords, handcuffs, police badges…..

Well – I have girls, so we have boxes of jewelry, make up, shoes, tiara’s, hair things, nail polish and stick on’s – you get the picture. I think if I had boys, yes, we would have boxes of weapons!! Oh wait – we do have a box of magic wands, pirate swords and a star wars light saber. Yeah – you normal!!

Michelle Huesgen - July 12, 2011 - 11:45 am

This one just might be my favorite blog … I am smiling all over my face! My 5 year old boy is almost 36 year old man and this took me back to a time long ago … when there was always something new in my life of being a Mom to a boy … I am smiling all over my face!

Hi, your blog design looks very similar to my one: Callaway описание

January - July 11, 2011 - 7:25 am

Lol lol. This blog entry really made me laugh. Thanks for sharing. Boys will be boys

Shelley Jimenez - July 11, 2011 - 5:23 am

My son used to get dressed up in his policeman costume and play animal patrol. He would take the cat (who let him play with her all day) and put her in jail (bathroom) and say, “come on you mangy mut, you’re going in the slammer”. It always made me nervous when he played police and pretend guns and things, but I guess that is just a boy. It’s funny how we worry about things today that boys have played for years and years. Now he is almost ten and has Nerf guns so I guess it is the same concept just soft darts to make mom’s and society feel better about boys palying with guns.

Melissa Diesch - July 10, 2011 - 10:30 am

Nolan(my 5 year old) has a very large basket of weapons-so I say YES…totally “our normal”=)

Joy Williams - July 10, 2011 - 5:34 am

That sounds totally normal to me! Foam swords are my son’s favorite. He goes through about one a month playing pirate! Boys will be boys!

Tonja - July 9, 2011 - 2:16 pm

Every good defender of the universe keeps a box of weapons in his closet. Didn’t you know? :+)

nicole - July 9, 2011 - 1:51 pm

the only thing not normal about this is the fact that he is neat enough to kep them in a box AND that he knew where the key was! My son hasall these same weapons except I’m lucky if I can contain them to his room much less a box! :)

Meghan - July 9, 2011 - 1:48 pm

My son actually has a bin in his room marked “weapons.” I label everything and that is what is in there…handcuffs, swords, nerf guns–weapons. My husband thinks it is hilarious, because I have actually said, “Look in the weapons bin.”

Vanessa Blevins - July 9, 2011 - 12:34 pm

Yes totally normal! My son does the same thing and then when friends come over he pulls them out and has a “show” of his weapons.

April B - July 9, 2011 - 7:57 am

This is such a snapshot of my everyday life with my soon to be 4 year old. Jack is a screamer as well and there is never a dull moment.

At least he is organized and has a box where he keeps all of them. LOL. My son has them all over the place! Totally normal! :)

Gidget - July 8, 2011 - 7:23 am

Ok now,:) after seeing that Good things are coming our way,it even builds excitment for me even more!! So much girly fun,one thing I like about these clothes for mama and daughter!!

Stacey Hansen - July 8, 2011 - 7:18 am

I have 4 wonderful, marvelous, kind and caring beautiful boys- 10-18 yrs old now but were all 5 once and yes- this is totally normal.

Suzanne James - July 8, 2011 - 6:59 am

TOTALLY NORMAL!!! My son wears a gun belt wherever we go, it’s this black plastic thing he got for his 2nd birthday (he’ll be 6 on July 17!). He takes it off in the car and sets it where he can put it back on quickly when I won’t let him wear it in. He always has a weapon….and a back up….like any good deputy!!

Treadmills for Sale - July 8, 2011 - 5:09 am

F7goQq I read online (computer problems) positive feedback about your resource. Didnt even believe it, and now saw myself. It turned out that I was not fooled.

Alisa Brubaker - July 7, 2011 - 10:21 pm

My 5 year old has a box of weapons under is bed as well. And a box of weapons for his “guys”. “Go put that in the weapons box”. Probably need to be careful saying that in the store! Ha! We don’t have handcuffs yet though!! Very funny.

Debbie Burke - July 7, 2011 - 7:05 pm

=) I LOVE it!! Little boys are so sweet and so tough sometimes.

My son sleeps with a flashlight and an air soft gun under his pillow. He showed them to me the other day. He doesn’t have the little pellets for the gun though, I should add in case anyone is worried. He has a whole box full of fake guns, badges, wallets and plastic handcuffs. He just wants to be like his Daddy. If you and your boys are ever in our neck of the woods, I’ve got some great guys for them to meet and talk to. You haven’t lived until you get to ride in a swat vehicle. At least that is what I’ve been told. =)

Mary Kay - July 7, 2011 - 6:58 pm

oh it sounds like my house!! I have a 12 year-old boy and an 8 year-old boy and this is for sure something my 8 year-old would do! He has treasure boxes stashed away all over his room. It is for sure a second child thing!! I always feel better to hear other parents go through similar situations.

jennifer g g - July 7, 2011 - 6:55 pm

my sweet 8 year old girl who considers herself a pageant queen, has ventured into the world of foul mouth humor. Its quite shocking at times, other times its difficult not to laugh.

MJC fan - July 7, 2011 - 5:02 pm

yes – I hope so = my 5 year old girl has a vampire/wizard bag – her spells (scribbles she has made up) – potions – weapons – teeth – everything she needs – she keeps it in a matilda jane hobo bag of all things!!!

Christine - July 7, 2011 - 3:21 pm

We have a St. Bernard and when my son was five he called her his “Weapon Dog”. He knew she was supposed to be some sort of rescue dog but he preferred that she be known as the weapon dog….”Come-ere weapon DOG”!!!!

Treadmills for Sale - July 7, 2011 - 1:39 pm

QxipHn I came across to your post and found it very useful for me. Thanks and good luck!)

Your story makes me smile! Thanks for sharing.

lil - July 7, 2011 - 12:51 pm

I am literally lmao about to roll in floor…. Kid after my own heart……
I can honestly say that you have a real BOY on your hands there. lol
Beast is back…. All 3 of my boys have been so much like this, once my oldest locked himself in our walk in gun case. Yes.. That’s serious and he got his butt busted but at the same time, how did he do that and what was he thinking?
Denise he and Chance would be best friends. A few days ago he sneaks out the back door, (ok) he thinks he does…. I watch him and i spy his BB gun and I see him walk in the field.. Pull it up and shoot it.
Me.. I am thinking, wth? He’s not allowed to have that with one of us and hes not allowed to shoot anything……. He’s trying to kill what we call barn birds. They are very mean birds and they do pick on the blue/red birds and will run the hummingbirds off…… However he’s not allowed to shoot them.
So here I go, yes I am upset. I look at him and I ask him what he’s thinking?
I’m sorry mom,it was picking on my pet chipmunk…. yes we have a chipmunk living in our hedges.
We love it…..
Keep in mind I am in TN and live on a farm.
I took the gun locked it up and explained that was no excuse.
When the entire time I am thinking.. That dang bird I would have killed you. LOL
Love those boys!!!!!!!!!!! and this story

Aimee Duffy - July 7, 2011 - 12:30 pm

Denise, my kids carry “weapons” at all times. My nephew always had a “knife” or “saber” down the back of his pants and his cuffs were on the ready to “arrest” whomever crossed him…lol. He even “arrested” kids in Kindergarten…face down, on the ground, “Don’t move, dirtbag!”….the whole nine yards! LOL! Now, the fact that my husband and brother-in-law are both cops might explain this behavior..but I think ALL little boys are aspiring “super-heros/cops/jailers”….it’s in their DNA..lol.

Tracy - July 7, 2011 - 11:51 am

Ummm, Helloo!?! Did anyone else notice the super cuteness in the B&W pic on the post?? Yep, we all got kids with weapons. But I wanna know more about those knits!! Fall perhaps? :@)

Kari - July 7, 2011 - 11:33 am

Yes. Completely normal. Then when they turn teenagers you don’t want to know what is in their “box of weapons”. Seriously.

Nikki - July 7, 2011 - 9:19 am

yes, yes, and yes agin I have 4 boys and though the youngest one is to young for all of this the others have guns ….(play of course)handcuffs, rope, duck tape hooks, old fishing stuff you name it they have it…and its all in a box in the closet!they have GREAT imaginations!….my poor girls are there victoms!

mel - July 7, 2011 - 9:19 am

My 8 year old has a weapons closet! we call it “the arsenal”. it’s were we keep all the Nerf guns, bullets, swords, shields, water guns, etc. Totally normal!

Carolyn O. - July 7, 2011 - 8:57 am

It sucks, but yes. I have tried my best to keep my ds from it, but with Daddy being in law enforcement, it’s hard. They LOVE the weapons. Add that to wanting to be like Daddy. We have all kinds of stuff I said I would never buy. :/

Tonya M - July 7, 2011 - 8:55 am

Normal boy: Dirt with noise on it!
We had to explain to our 3 yr old daughter not to pretend shot guns with our fingers. So now she just “freezes” you with the palm of her hand or shoots out her rainbow power!

Lauren - July 7, 2011 - 8:26 am

Oh I am sooo glad to hear you say that you have the same reaction to the crying with your little one…my sweet boy is the SAME way and I love him but ohhhh at times the crying and screaming and then when there is a reason we dont come running ;)

Ok let me fill you in ALL boys have a box of weapons and they are always kicking punching or play fighting with the soemthing that we cannot see. It is amazing to hear stories and know our crazieness is NORMAL ;) Have a great day and enjoy those weapon boxes and those special moments they are creating endless memories

Kim - July 7, 2011 - 7:46 am

I think all 5 year olds are weird LOL I thought it was just mine that was quirky and then I went on a field trip with his kindergarten and nope…. apparently it’s all of them LOL

Jen B. - July 7, 2011 - 7:45 am

That is so stinking cute! And in our house it is very normal to have a big tub full of guns, ammunition, swords, handcuffs, etc . . . Sadly for my son, his big sister likes to hide the keys to his handcuffs.

Robin B - July 7, 2011 - 7:38 am

Oh yeah! My six year old has a stash of swords, light sabers, cowboy pistols, camo guns, and various capes and belts to hold them as he defeats all sorts of bad guys (and sometimes his little sister). He also has a stash of sticks and cardboard tubes outside that are his outside swords and bows. Sounds like Gabe is a pretty normal 5 year old!

Kristen Fridley - July 7, 2011 - 7:21 am

My 4-year-old girl brandishes my husband’s drumsticks all the time and says things like, “I will run you through!” Oh dear…

Kaitlyn'sMom - July 7, 2011 - 6:45 am

Wow! LOL Sounds like my son! He is 5 1/2 and all he does is play with “weapons”. Kinda freaks me out actually..but I know he is just being a boy. LOL My son will actually take his sister’s Trio’s and build scope guns out of them. Anything with guns, bow and arrows, transformers etc..he is into! Lord help all us mom’s of boys! LOL

The Rachster - July 7, 2011 - 6:40 am

yes TOTALLY normal (and I say this with a degree in such things). All little kids keep “stashes”. Some are more obvious than others. Boxes of weapons are pretty normal for little boys. Is he a get up and go from the moment he wakes until he falls asleep type of boy? That is typical of that type of boy but seriously stashes are normal. For Collin his stash is bugs. Fake bugs, stuffed bugs and in several areas outside REAL bugs. But yes totally normal. And TOTALLY hilarious how you find him but I understand the concern.

TEISHA - July 7, 2011 - 6:40 am

So funny…my son turns anything and I mean anything into a weapon even his favorite stuffed puppy/machine gun into a weapon!! Boys what can ya say!!!!!

Debra/Sophie Stallings - July 7, 2011 - 5:45 am

Thank you for getting my morning started. I laughed so hard when I read this. Gabe is a trip!! LOL

nursejennie76 - July 7, 2011 - 5:35 am

Was always normal at my house!

Amy Littlefield - July 7, 2011 - 5:34 am

Absolutely! I have even given my son clean up instructions like, “Put all the Star Wars guys in the Star Wars box. Put all the weapons in the weapons box.” :)

Alexandra Farnham - July 7, 2011 - 5:20 am

I think all 5 year olds have some sort of stash of their likes…My son keeps stashes of sweets in random spots so I can’t find them…. Eventually, I do when I’m cleaning. Half the time it’s wrappers and left over candy stuck to the rug….I would’ve never expected this since both me and my husband are both not that into sweets to begin with. His grandmother is the culprit. She’s always giving him candy…

Wendy - July 7, 2011 - 5:15 am

Hilarious. My nephew is currently shooting everything in sight, doesn’t have any guns but he is using whatever he can find to make into a weapon (sticks, carrots, LOL) – I think that is pretty normal. I have a son (I won’t say which one) who hoards cases of water in his room – I don’t know if he is stocking up in case of a nuclear attack or what, but I know my sister used to do the same thing except she would fill up our used 2 liter bottles, so instead of cases, she had big bottles lining the bottom of her closet. Kids are funny.

Elizabeth - July 7, 2011 - 4:56 am

Well, at my house, it is totally and completely normal! :) Your house sounds a lot like mine!

EmilyWood - July 7, 2011 - 3:59 am

Oh yeah, completely normal. And they don’t grow out of it either, at least not by 7…..I think your kids and mine would get along swimmingly. ;)

Abby - July 7, 2011 - 3:33 am

Totally normal…I hope! Since my almost 5 year old has a treasure trove of “weapons” and plays police and ninja constantly!

Pam C - July 7, 2011 - 1:37 am

LMAO!!!!!!! I have two girls and we just have boxes of hair decor and jewelry in our closet, but this is so something my littlest would do! Only she would do it by getting her hair caught in a nailpoish-entangled-brush-with hair-clippies-mess!! I’m sure it is normal. Do not worry!

G Brown - July 6, 2011 - 10:43 pm

That is SO normal! My son is 11 and still has boxes of weapons in his room and in the garage. He can’t get enough! Ever! :) When he was three he always had at least 2 light sabers hanging from his pants. He would get sores where they would rub the skin right off his hips! But boys love their weapons!!!

Michelle P. - July 6, 2011 - 10:35 pm

Oh, I am so done with the weapons thing at our house! I feel like my kid is going to blow up, cut, or somehow mame someone someday. My husband and I are always quizing him about what to do if he sees a real gun. He gives all the right answers, but I still worry! And yes, everything remotely shapes like a gun or sword, is just that! Argh!

alicabacon - July 6, 2011 - 9:59 pm

well…it is depend on your kid..what he likes to play..but i do not think these are good toys to play

mimi - July 6, 2011 - 9:10 pm

All children will find something to be their “play” weapon…45 years ago, when my sisters and I were little, it was a stick it the backyard that became Little Joe’s gun, or Matt Dillion’s rifle:) {we were somewhat poor] Yes, little girls playing cowboys:) SO much fun…I turned out ok, I think:)

JenBromeland - July 6, 2011 - 9:04 pm

If it makes you feel better, my 4 yr old GIRL asked for Santa to bring her a Policeman kit of weapons…

Sarah Smolen - July 6, 2011 - 8:56 pm

I would say yes. I have 4 boys and I can say that we have TONS of weapons, they are kept in a tub, much bigger than a box :)

Denise - July 6, 2011 - 8:50 pm

Thank you ladies…cuz serious, I was a bit nervous about his fascination with weapons. Joe just liked hotwheel cars and legos!!

Maranda B - July 6, 2011 - 8:47 pm

Absolutely normal! As the mother of a nine year old boy and a kindergarten teacher I can tell you that even if you don’t buy them weapons they create them from legos or sticks. Boys!

Heather farr - July 6, 2011 - 8:36 pm

YES YES!! Sutton is 3years old and has swords, helmets, and shields. It makes me feel so good that other moms don’t go running on the first cry for help!

Rachel Joy - July 6, 2011 - 8:20 pm

Bwhahaha! Yes, completely normal. Except my son would never keep his weapons in the closet…too obvious of a hiding place–he keeps them stashed all over his room and in various places throughout the house in case he needs them. LOL Today my broom went missing only to later find it in with the kids toys…b/c a broom also doubles as a sword :) Don’t worry.

Shannon - July 6, 2011 - 8:19 pm

LOL, yes all little boys have weapons. Even little girls sometimes, well Evie does anyways. This story is too funny! I am sure Gabe will see the humor in it when he is older.

Michelle Bjors - July 6, 2011 - 8:14 pm

I think all kids keep something. Snce he is a boy, be glad it isn’t live creatures. That is what my son had:)

MyLilyPie - July 6, 2011 - 8:10 pm

my son is only 3…but he is well on his way to that I think…LOL…boys!

Rachelle Sipkovsky - July 6, 2011 - 8:09 pm

I have so start by saying…I smiled and felt normal as I read this! As a mom of 3 boys (and now 1 little girl), I feel confident in saying that there is always a “surprise” something that each little boy has. My oldest….a stash of money! My middle….a stash of fast food and chewed bubble gum in and around his carseat. My youngest….a favorite spot in his closet where he likes to “go” when he can’t quite make it to the bathroom. lol So, no my boys don’t have a box of weapons….but they all have something to surprise me with! Funny enough….I wouldn’t want them any other way. ;-)

Cpuhl - July 6, 2011 - 8:08 pm

I think it is totally normal! He has a big brother that has, no doubt, shown him the ropes! At least your well protected, right? Poor Gabe…little cutie!

tewday - July 6, 2011 - 8:00 pm

Awww poor Gabe…yes, my 5yo daughter keeps her “precious” rocks in a pink plastic Hello Kitty box in her closet!

Mandy - July 6, 2011 - 7:59 pm

I guess you can never be to prepared?? :) Boys are something else aren’t they?

Michelle - July 6, 2011 - 7:56 pm

Yes! My 9 year old has every weapon imaginable in a basket in his closet, including handcuffs!! The problem is not handcuffing himself to anything, but handcuffing his sisters to things!

Ana Perelman - July 6, 2011 - 7:56 pm

too funny

totally something like Daniel would do back in his 5s :)

it gets only better!
