DIY Tote Bag

Evening Ladies!

I’m back again with another DIY post.

This time I am sharing how to make your very own tote bag.

Use this tote as a purse, reusable grocery bag, or maybe even for a cute Halloween bag for all that candy!

Here are the steps I took to make this cute bag:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

-Scissors

-Straight pins

-Four pieces of 15″x17″ fabric for body and liner of bag

-Four pieces of 2″x24″ fabric for straps

-Small scrap of fabric for patch

-Small scrap of facing for patch

STEP 1

Cut four pieces of fabric 15″x17″

(Two pieces for body and two pieces for lining)

Next, pin around the two long sides and one short side and stitch.

STEP 2

First, iron facing to back of scrap for patch.

Next, trace or draw on heart then cut it out.

STEP 3

Pin and stitch patch onto just the FRONT of the body of the bag.

The body pieces should already be sewn together so, only stitch the patch to one pieces of the body.

(Make sure it is CENTERED)

STEP 4

After cutting four 2″x24″ pieces for straps, pin and stitch with RIGHT faces together.

Next, flip right sides out and top stitch along the long sides.

STEP 5

This was a little hard to make it make sense in the photos so let’s see if I can explain it better.

First, place bag body INSIDE liner with RIGHT faces together.

Next, pin straps in place BETWEEN liner and body.

(You’ll want to make sure straps are in the exact same spots on both sides–I measured in 3″ and pinned there)

After leaving about a 4″ section unpinned and the rest pinned all the way around the top, top stitch all but 4″ unpinned section.

Finally, flip right side out and top stitch all around top folding in and lining up 4″ section so it looks the same as the already stitch part.

STEP 6

Enjoy your new tote!

(I ironed mine to make all the seams nice and crisp!)

What do you guys think? Was that easy enough to follow?

I LOVE this little project and hope you guys do to!

*Wanna win a fabric stash of your very own and try this project yourself?

Just leave a comment with a DIY project idea you’d like for me to try in a couple weeks and I will choose a winner tomorrow!*

Hi, Kiara!
This looks like a great nap time project!! I would love to try it. I can never have enough bags!!

How about trying one of those fabric wrapped necklaces? I believe it involves sewing a “tube”, and then using styrofoam balls inside the tube to create the “bead” effect, you tie a knot around the styrofoam to keep the “bead” in place……I made one a long time ago, and can’t remember the way to do it exactly, but it was super cute!!

Shay - October 23, 2012 - 10:23 pm

Mindy h - October 23, 2012 - 11:07 pm

How a out a wreath?

Sarah S. - October 23, 2012 - 11:14 pm

I just bought my first sewing machine and starting my lessons next week! I have never sewed a thing in my entire life but I have had a urge to do so lately.

Honestly, I have a baby girl and I love all the cute clothes for her and stuff like that but what I would love to see is a cool unique cape, especially for boys. My son loves super heros and then my daughter as she slowly gets older I can tell she will be into it as well.

Leah Dunham - October 23, 2012 - 11:17 pm

How about some bird shape or fliwer shape decorative pillows for our little ones bedrooms :)

Amy D. - October 23, 2012 - 11:28 pm

Adorable bag- this may be one of my Christmas gift DIYs for the kids’ teachers.

My DIY project this week is monster knee patches. I have seen it from a couple of blogs through pinterest and decided my son’s clothes needed a little attention- sometimes I feel a little guilty that my daughter is decked out in adorable MJ and he is sporting jeans and tees, even though he couldn’t care less ;)

Anyways, just in time for Halloween, I patched a couple of holes in two pairs of his jeans. Simply cut away the loose threads and use a red iron-on patch on the inside so the red ‘mouth’ of the monster is peeking out through the hole. Next add felt bits for eyes and teeth; hand embroider them on and embroider around the patch if you want to reinforce it. Super cute in a sacry sort of way :)

Liana - October 23, 2012 - 11:31 pm

I’d love to see your take on hair pretties for our girls to wear with their MJ!

Amber Vaughn - October 23, 2012 - 11:31 pm

Andrea Peery - October 23, 2012 - 11:47 pm

Using scrap fabric to cover cork board and put it in a frame for artwork or pictures to hang in my daughters room. Maybe even get wooden letters and cover with the scraps……or this could be your next DIY project but that is what I would do if I won a stash of fabric!

J. Starost - October 23, 2012 - 11:54 pm

Use scraps to patch kids second hand jeans. The jeans are already worn in so kids will love how comfy they are and you can reuse some favorite fabrics and embellish with some embroidery stitches.

Khara - October 24, 2012 - 12:03 am

How about a DIY stocking?

Heather D. - October 24, 2012 - 12:10 am

How about a cute little toddler skirt using 2 fat quarters?

Andria K - October 24, 2012 - 12:39 am

How about DIY appliance covers. For items such as the toaster, blender, and kitchenaid mixer. This would be a great way to keep these items dustfree and germ free, especially if they are siting out in the open. They could have a draw string that makes them compatable to most of these appliances. In additon, if they were of christmas pattern they would appear as beautiful presents and serve as festive decor. They could even be topped off with gift tags and stick on bows for additonal decorative purposes.

Becky - October 24, 2012 - 1:26 am

Fabric covered coat hangers for our pretty clothes or maybe a bow holder to hang all our m2m hair pretties.

I know it is Fall,, but these are great for little ones that cannot keep flip flops on their feet…and a great use of scrap material…they are flip flop straps that snap on and off.

These would be great for matching MJC items, and could make for a great surprise gift, or fund raiser.
