Okay, I fully admit I am not the best typer, editor nor grammar queen but hey I can make some pretty cute clothes! So between the 4, I’m happy with just one. You just need one thing to shine at right?
With that said, I think I finally found the result when the worlds Typo Queen and Cuteness Lover collide. What you may be wondering? Well, let’s just take a look. But first I must say, as I am laughing at myself, I went over and over this sample say, 10-15 times. And sorry Sam, but you are coming under the bus with me, cuz combined we looked at this sample at least 20x.
And here you have it. I am totally embarrassed, but I know I can’t ignore it. A mistake is a mistake and it is what it is. So I’ll own up to it and heck you can now own it at a new lower price! So maybe it was meant to be. But seriously trust me (not my spelling) when I say you would have never noticed the mis-spelling had it not been pointed out. You know what, I should just blame it on David. He is supposed to be my editor. Dang it! If he wasn’t always at lunch with Lynette’s Todd he would’ve caught the error. Yup, let’s blame the husband.
The beloved Faith (ful) Tee. Yes, faithful that Matilda Jane is pretty dang cute. Faithful that Matilda Jane is a super fun place. Faithful that Matilda Jane is an unpredictable clothing coming. And Faithful that I am pretty PREDICTABLE in the area of typos. I know, you can’t see it! The ruffle is embroidered in tone on tone white. It reads “Chase a Cloud, Lagh Out Loud. Yup, and Lagh is certainly not spelled Lagh…well, unless you are me!!
Now it is your turn to laugh. Or should I say LAGH. Seriously, I have painted this quote hundreds, I mean literally hundreds of times on walls and mirrors and headboards and what not. How do I send a file with a type, proof the file, look at a sample in 5 sizes, approve everything and not notice. Wow, this goes to show how full my brain can be some days. Craziness but loveliness that is one of my favorite go to pieces.
Okay enough of laughing at myself trying to justify a mistake. It’s done, what can I do but buckle my shoe? How about say, OMG is this the cutest ever? Oh, and I can admit, David was right. I am a terrible speller and editor and grammar what not..but I am pretty good at making cute clothes! You just gotta shine at one thing! And CUTE is it!

Lagh Out Loud!
LOL It happens to the best of us!!
Always unpredictable! I find it cheeky and fun the misspelling of the word Laugh.
shit the front door!
smooch
I’m Laghing right now. I am a bad speller too, it must be in my genes because my son’s teacher told me he would survive without spell check.
I mean “he wouldn’t survive without spell check!”
Because is makes it personal…I love it!
That’s hilarious!! Reminds me of being a kid and seeing my dad spell soccer soaker. Haha I was about 7 and had to call him out on it. I use to spell good but fat has quickly declined sing being out of school. Spelling gets the best of us!
You are right, we all probably would have missed it too, our minds would have put the letters in for us! You are a star at designing & we all apprecaite that so much:-) I love the new line!
Kelly
Love it! I’ll take a typo tee – for the style – how can we own one of your mistakes?
LOL. You DO make the cutest clothes ever though
Does this mean the shirt is FREE as in the title?
Don’t worry about it! Loving the teal ruffle dress – total cuteness!!
I don’t think anyone cares about your spelling, just keep the clothes coming!!!!!
I can’t even see it! Wow, if that’s the worst mistake you make then who cares. Yes, you do make adorable clothes and you are great at it! And that picture…that dress…that little girl! Amazing! I love it I love it I love it!!!! Can’t wait to see it in person!
Spell check or not, it is still filled with cuteness!
Cute is cute. Period.
So, how do we get one of the Lagh shirts? They are adorable no matter what the spelling is!
Brave, so very brave of you!! But we all mistakes, I can hardly type my name without spelling it wrong, I get in too big of a hurry! You’re forgiven, LAGH out loud!
Got to love spell check!!
LOL! Oops. It happens to the best of us!
My dad used to be a billboard painter, he was always joking around because I lot of the boards would have Next Exit in an arrow, but he would say Nexit Exit. Turns out he painted that on a billboard and didn’t note until 3 days later while driving by, lol.
Mistakes happen, laugh (or lagh) with them not at them
I really don’t think the spelling error is a big deal. I think the big deal is that you are not pulling it. I don’t understand why a company would expect to sell a defective item like that?
Why not donate it like you do with so many perfect items?
What’s even funnier to me is that the mom’s of the kids didn’t notice, the photographer didn’t notice, the printer didn’t notice! Oh well lagh happens!
No worries! I’d love to have one of these “one of a kind” MJC items!
I love it! I am always getting corrected on facebook, I don’t care because it’s who I am and half the time my phone adds its own words in so I say it is just they way it is today! lol I would still pay full price! Great that you can laugh at it heeee! Wish I had half your talent! Thanks for making my girls look so darn cute and for making me feel cute when I wear your clothes! One more thing maybe you should make some maternity pieces how cute would that be?:)
well the turquoise dress just moved from my maybe list to my for sure!!! how cute!
I would definitely notice that the word was misspelled. I don’t think I can buy a shirt with a spelling error.
Love it!!!! It shows who you are and that is exactly why I love MJC!
Well, I definitely would have noticed!
I’ll be interested to see how many will actually buy a shirt with a misspelled word on it! lol But, hey, if they will buy, more power to ya!
OMG I’m sorry that is so funny! I can spell but I can’t type worth pooty, so I can easily see how these things happen! Firefox women, lol, spell check is always on wherever you go! Won’t stop me from buying and WOW the teal dress is ours! Any idea wha size the model is wearing?
Count me in as a horrible speller! It happens to everyone, but so thrilled to see these adorable sneak peeks! And my hands will be all over the tee regardless!
Too bad it wasn’t all caps…you could have made it an acronym: Love~Achieve~Give~Honor, or something! ☺
(Now I’m nervous I’ve misspelled something!)
It is an 18m..not sure what size she is…they run pretty true to size and are fitted.
I think the shirt is cute, and I understand mistakes happen, but unfortunately I can’t spend money on something with a spelling error on it. I’d be embarrassed to have to explained it if someone noticed. I wouldn’t buy an inexpensive shirt at Target with a spelling error, and I won’t just because it’s MJC. You should consider including a free LAGH shirt with every clothing order.
OOH..great idea cuz it is all caps!!
It is shocking how many people are willing to own one of Denise’s mistakes. Like it’s acceptable. Like it’s the BEST THING ever (all caps on purpose). The shirts should be free. Or take $5 for them and donate the money. I’m just stunned that someone can laugh this off as if it’s OK for a child to wear a misspelled word.
I’m not laughing. I’m just sad for all of it.
haha, love it! my research lab group made t-shirts that said “rearch” lab – everyone still wears ‘em, they have character:)
Who cares! I love the top and pants. My little one can’t spell laugh yet.
Love it! As mom’s we do so much…spelling correctly is probably at the bottom of the list of things to do right.
Not perfection but pretty dang close =)
I think my kid would get made fun of if she was wearing a shirt that mispelled laugh. Why not just pull it and turn the fabric into Wendy dresses back in China? That is what I would do if I were Denise.
An acronym? Seriously? It was a mistake. We all make them. Now do the right thing. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. I cannot believe people would not be embarrassed to buy that and put it on their child. I am baffled. I do think you make beautiful clothing, but this is weird. Just sayin’.
I would even buy it at full price!!!!
Seriously? Poor spelling is not unpredictable, whimsical or cheeky. It is poor spelling! I am astonished that it would be sold at all, discounted or not. I can not understand putting a shirt on your daughter with a word spelled incorrectly. What kind of message does that send? As a professional educator I am absolutely dumbfounded by some of the reactions. It was a mistake – other clothing companies have made in the past and they have pulled the product. Disappointed by this.
So how much is it and when can we buy it. Too bad it happened, but sure is an adorable design.
Sorry. No matter how cute it is, it is ridiculous to try and sell it. I would never put a misspelled shirt on myself or my child. Part of being a business person is admitting a mistake and fixing it, even if it means taking a loss on that item NOT passing off the mistake to your customers by trying to convince us it is funny or cute.
Everybody makes mistakes. It happens to the best of us. It is how we deal with them that really matters. I am sure the shirt is darling, but do we reallly want a bunch of little girls walking around thinking that is how the word is spelled? Well, it must be because mommy bought it and the designer LAGHED all the way to the bank.
Think about the bad advertising this mispelled word will give to Matilda Jane. MJC, the company that lets girls walk around town with “lagh” on their back, oh yeah, that is what I want to dress my kids in! Seriously, do you really want a mispelled word as the message your conveying to people new to the brand. They won’t notice the cute clothes. They will focus on the “lagh” on the back.
Just get rid of them. Your company is worth more. Send them back to the factory and turn them into something else. You don’t want this as your public image, really, do you?
At least you can laugh at yourself!!!
I also love the idea of throwing in a free one with each order! Just as long as it’s the same size as most of the clothes in the order, it would be loved for sure!
Wow, so you’re actually going to go ahead and sell these? That is completely unacceptable. A typo on a blog or Facebook is one thing, but on an item in your line? That is considered defective, not cute, not cheeky, not unpredictable, defective! I cannot believe these weren’t pulled. I would be so embarrassed to have my child wear that and you should be embarrassed to sell these things! Wow, I’m appalled, to be honest.
check that one off the list- putting misspelled clothing on my child is not something I want to spend money for.
Haha, ummm………..yeah. I’m sorry but I will NOT put my child in something that has spelling errors on it and send her to school. I can’t believe all you that are saying how cool it is, we love it, etc, etc, etc. Please, remove the lips and let Denise sit down!
What I dont understand is why everyone is freaking out about this. Honestly if you dont want to buy one then dont, but going on a rant about it, when this company does sooo many good things for people is just reflecting on you not them. I personally saw how sweet MJC is when my nominee got a HUGE box full of adorable clothes around Christmas. And furthermore if people are getting that close to your kids clothes that they can see a misspelled word, thats a whole other issue. Denise this is your company and you have to make the decisions that work for you. I personally love the shirt.
I don’t see anyone freaking out? I just think people are being honest and expecting a company to handle a mistake properly. This is a company, not a fan club.
Lagh out loud at Jams.:)
Well Denise, I love how honest you are! Lets face it you could have just trashed them and never told…but in the true spirit of YOU ..we got the full story and a great lagh..Umm I mean laugh! I admire your idea to sell, I think I myself will pass, but I love that you bear no shame in who you are bad speller and all!! And lets face it your excellence in CUTENESS overshadows any mistake you can make..<3 MJC
And the darn shirt is perfect for sandbox fun, gardening, mud puddle splashing or just soft for wearing to bed..
KONICHIWA Denise,
I’m currently in Okinawa.
They have cute clothes with misuses of the English language
It’s called Engrish!
Take a look here http://www.engrish.com/
I think it’s funny! Who knows maybe you just stumbled onto a new line of engrish clothing =)
I’ve been reading past post since finding you blog. I think it’s awesome the time you dedicate to writing to your friends. Some who you may have never met but in their hearts they see you as a friend.
Friends don’t judge friends.
They LOL with each other about mistakes and move forward.
I too have terrible grammar and spelling. I try my best to catch what I can correct.
I blog everyday on my site and I’m sure some people must cringe when they read it. But my site is about photography and not grammar so I concentrate on excelling as a photographer.
Love the outfit!
prosperity, peace and love
Denise
Oh, Kathy darling… Breathe, hon. The great thing about this is it is making me LAGH now, will make me LAGH when I see it, and provide endless LAGHS once it’s on my little darlin’!!! All because Denise tells a good story, ENDEARS me to her, and brings it all back down to earth for all of us. Kudos, Denise! Here’s to lots of good LAGHS to come!!! GAMOH… Girl After My Own Heart!!!
xoxo p.s. That is my acronym BTW… did I spell it right??? he-he xoxoxoxo
funny! oh well, what can ya do…
I am an English teacher and I will offer my proofreading services in trade for MJ!!!
I will buy the top regardless Denise. It is super cute and who cares about the misspelling! Everyone makes mistakes! Love the clothes and that little teal dress is adorable. It is a must have.
If you all want your kids to be mocked by other kids for wearing a shirt with laugh misspelled and have the other mommies talk behind your back because you spent money on that shirt, be my guest.
It’s just a simple mistake. Mistakes happen. They are part of life & we all make them. I sometimes drive through the car line to drop off my child at school & forget to drop him off! We have to laugh at the mistakes! MJC is a beautiful company. They are about supporting others, lifting them up…not dragging them down. Think about that before you start posting the negative remarks. If we all stayed just a little more positive in our everyday lives and supported one another no matter the little mistakes, this world would be a much more beautiful place. That is what MJC is about!! Everyone have a blessed day:)
I posted this on facebook, but lagh is an alternative to LOL. That is what I read on urbandictionary.com. The shirt itself is adorable! You can’t see the mistake in the picture. I am also loving the white shirts…..I am thinking they may work as uniform shirts
Are those Samantha pants?! So cute!
Ok, wow. How ironic that someone would worry about “being talked about behind their back”… hmmmm
I’m just wondering if anyone ever shops at outlet malls, where all the COMPANIES sell their misspelled or defective but still usuable goods? I dont see anyone complaining about getting gymboree or baby gap cheaper.
Oh my gosh ladies, for real? You would really put shirts with misspellings on your kids? Like from the Gap or Boden or Gymbo too, or just this one because it’s MJC? Trying to wrap my brain around this.
Haha! I think I would buy it just for the lagh! Can’t wait to get that blue dress either
This def makes me question the quality assurance of MJC. I can’t believe that you are still going to sell these shirts for profit. There are some children who need shirts, they will prob get more use out of them, so think of giving these misspelled shirts to them.
I agree, you make cute clothes, not cute enough that I would put a misspelled top on my girls.
Yeah SARA I would..Just like I would let my kid wear a food stain shirt to play in the dirt or to paint. I wouldn’t say it was our Sunday best but definitely fine for PJ wear or play why not? And when your MJC friends come over for a play date you can ALL have your girls wear the LAGH shirt for a LAGH! IT is just a shirt, nobaody is saying to wear it in public if your concerned about what other people think. I could care less what others think of me or my child, I love her, she is not defined by your judgements and neither am I!
Okay, so if MJC gives them away or sells them for like $5, mamas will let their kids play in the dirt with them. Is anyone willing to pay full price for a lagh shirt and let their kid walk around town in it and/or wear it to school or a playground?
KATHY not sure why you are asking that since the post clearly says the shirt will be sold at a lower price rather than original price? I have no idea how much, but I cant imagine too much?
I heard the shirt is 25$ and non-returnable?
I would let me kid wear a stained shirt for play too… but we don’t BUY stained shirts, just like I wouldn’t buy a defective one. I guess I’ve never seen a shirt with a misspelling sold anywhere, so just kind of surprised to see people actually excited about owning one? It’s all good though; to each her own, I guess!
So will the laugh we get about this be free, or the shirt?
Donna, well so glad it will be cheaper than retail. Phew!
Hmmm………… Love the 2nd outfit.
Like I said in my first post, I myself will not be buying, but if they are given away I would use it. And if other moms buy I am not going to make them feel stupid for it either, I guess because I wouldn’t appreciate that myself.
Who said anyone would be stupid?
Love the teal dress for my blond hair, blue-eyed cutie! Everyone makes mistakes Denise…the important part is if they have a good heart! And you definitely do!!!
Who is this Kathy woman? She clearly has too much time on her hands…
Love the teal dress too!! I love MJC and feel bad I used your comments thread as a platform to argue with Kathy I apologize … I truly think MJC is about spreading the love so sorry
I think that’s awesome!! Who doesn’t love a good story? I now need one of those shirts. Hilarious! I am also a Typo Queen. And proud of it. Lol.
Honestly…..because MJ clothing is so carefree, like that of a child…I would buy this tee with no problem because it would be very child like. My daughter is 7 years old and while she does exceptionally well in her spelling, she DOES spell things wrong but you can still see what she was trying to say. That’s what the shirt reminds me of…my daughter. So, I personally see nothing wrong with selling it, if you don’t want it, don’t like it…then don’t buy it. It’s as simple as that. Most companies do have human beings working for them ….I think this mistake “humanizes” the brand even more so for me and reminds me that real people work there!
Funny story! Just don’t buy it if you don’t want it.
Hi Denise…I posted a message to Joe in a previous blog that when days are rough to remember to “Live, Love, and Laugh”. What is the irony of that?!! Just do that – we all learn from our mistakes and think of the bigger picture and how much good you do and the happiness you bring people.
If you ask me, “it’s practically perfect!”. Yep, this is a must have…better call Natalie now!
Denise- yes, we all make mistakes, but, try to sell them? …even discounted? How about donating them? I know of a great group of kids going on a mission trip to Africa this summer who would love to take the shirts with them…a lot of village girls would love to have those shirts-and they don’t care about the missspelling…
How bout making it stand for something in the GMTA style. LAGH could mean “laugh and get happy” or something. Any thoughts?
Denise, you are more than just pretty good at making clothes. You are amazing! This shirt is adorable. No one is ever going to know. Don’t worry about it . We love it!
Pure Awesomeness! I LOVE it! Who needs a vowel???LOL
We all make mistakes. However, I think it is a disgrace that MJC would sell an item of clothing that has a misspelled word. If this is the image you present for our little girls, then this is a company I will no longer support.
Here you go Denise – He played 3 NHL games with his name spelled wrong on the back of his jersey and no one noticed – not even him of course!

This has gotten CRAZY. It’s a shirt. I think everyone needs to calm down. All we need is a seam ripper.
My 6 year old does not understand why the word “LAGH” would be on a shirt. She wanted to know if it would be fixed before she gets the shirt. I told her no. Again she wants to know why. I am with the population that doesn’t understand why it isn’t being pulled and donated to kids that could really use a shirt. For those of you that buy- “to each her own” but spelling words incorrectly is not something I want to start encouraging in the first grade.
My mother always taught me if you don’t have something nice to say DON’T SAY ANYTHING at ALL!!!!!
Sometimes I don’t listen to my mother. Denise gives and gives and gives and never tells anyone about it.
So, if you don’t want to buy the shirt don’t but keep your mouths shut!!!!
There are those of us that buy Matilda Jane for the right reasons, the clothes are amazing, it is so much fun, with all the giveaways(gymboree and gap don’t do that),and most of all Denise and staff are amazing caring people that will touch your heart if you let them. Then there will those of you that don’t buy the shirt this season and 2 years from now will pay twice for it on EBAY. So either way it is your choice because we are grown adults, but please don’t talk badly about something, that is just not nice!
Does anyone know of a trunkkeeper in Washington State – around Seattle maybe? I left an email and haven’t heard back and I am ANXIOUS to order from the new collection! Thanks!
Eye SEW waunt wun uf thoze shurts. Yu stil rawck!
Having a shirt with a typo is not going to negatively affect a child. If it does, you’re doing something wrong. I think it’s a good opportunity to teach your daughter how to admit a silly mistake and laugh it off. It’s obviously not an obvious typo. I’ll buy it!! My husband, the professional educator, is totally okay with it.
I love the tee and your candid willingness to make light of what could easily have been a frustrating situation for you, Denise! Even though in my pre-mommy days I was a copy editor and grammar guru for a publishing company, I would totally buy the shirt for my little ones!! At least “lagh” sort of phonetically looks like it could be pronounced laugh!
Amen to all the positive ladies out there. Denise, this is hilarious. It doesn’t seem like it this week, but next week it will be water under the bridge. Such is life. Period.
And for the “sweet gal” who asked everyone to remove their lips from your derriere, let me just say, “it’s not ass kissing.” “It’s kindness and understanding.” Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean you need to rake someone over the coals for it. Words hurt. Whether they are written or spoken. Shine on, girl!!
Haha! Cute story! Hey, things happen to all of us. Go you for owning it!!!! Another reason to love MJC!
Actually, this shirt could end up being one of the most valuable pieces of MJ ever made.
It’s like a mule coin. Sometimes defects make things even more collectable. If anyone still has a NWT Faithfil Tee ten years from now, it could be worth big bucks!!!
I think the shirt is adorable! Owning up to the mistake is an amazing thing to do and I admire you for it. With it being tone on tone I seriously doubt anyone will notice that the word is misspelled. My daughter’s only three so she and her circle of friends surely won’t anyway!
Last night I posted that the shirt is “practically perfect” and will get one for my Madelyn! It’s cute and fun and that’s what’s so great about mjc! Got to thinking this am…how Easy it would be for us mommas to even hand stitch a small “u” on there in each of our girls’ fav color! It would give it a pop of color and would be unpredictable and personalized! Would b a fun mom\daughter activity. Just a thought… Looking “sew” forward to seeing all of the HOC cuteness! Shine on, Denise!
Wow. Seems like some folks need to take a step back and breathe. If you don’t like the typo, don’t buy the shirt. Personally, I won’t buy it. If it doesn’t bother you, buy it! It’s that simple. After sending in my nominee for “Spread the Love”, I noticed a few typos in my email. My nominee still received a huge box of goodies. While I won’t likely buy this item, I’m sure MJC has so many other great things in store. Why worry about on shirt??? I still love MJC and choose to buy most of my daughter’s clothes from MJ. In addition to the great quality and style, I love the heart of the company. Their generousity won’t soon be forgotten by my family!
What is the name of this dress? Wondering what release it will be as well. So adorable! Thanks for the Lagh Denise…totally something I would do. We’ve all had moments like this in some form
This is a perfect example of made in China!
I really don’t understand the uproar about this… Like so many have said–if you don’t want it–don’t buy it. If anything, I am going to take full advantage of a shirt, discounted price, that if nothing else, can be used for layering. I can’t wait to see it in person–to see even how noticeable it is. It is tone on tone and the blog reads that it is on the ruffle–which means it is also really small. In the grand scheme, not that big of deal–just lagh it off!
You know, I hadn’t meant to comment on this thread, but Mary’s comment made me do a double take and put two and two together. Since when is Matilda Jane made in China?? One of the reasons that I have always loved MJ is for the quality. Made in China is not synonomous with “top quality standards”. And I noticed that one of my Platinum items wan’t made in the USA either. What is going on? Anyone?
Sounds like it isn’t something that will jump out at you anyways, right? Sure it’s a shame, but not a huge deal! Selling at a discount is a great idea if you ask me. What would be a shame would be to trash the shirts and NOT give everyone the option of buying it simply because of a not so noticable letter missing. That would seem like a huge waste of cute clothing to me! Is it written in cursive like a lot of MJ trim? If so, my 4 yr old can’t read it anyways and NO ONE we know inspects the trim on her clothing that closely. ; )
Hi Rachel-
We manufacture in USA, Peru and China. We take great pride on everyone we work with for they have become an extended part of the MJC family. They too take great pride in the products that create for us.
Thanks for the reply Denise. I hope it didn’t sound like a criticism, but when I made my first MJ purchase, I remember my TK mentioning where they were all manufactured and China was never mentioned. I suppose a growing company inevitably will end up on the other side of the pond eventually. Thanks again for creating extraordinary clothing that I treasure.
I discovered MJ via hand-me-downs and just love it! I wanted to know if the items from Platinum are made in the States? I love the option to buy American (and pay more) – not as a statement about quality (the MJ clothes we have inherited are darling and well made!), but more as an investment in our country and future …
Tiffany-
Yes, most of Platinum (about 95%) is made in the states. On occasion if we have left over fabrics from past seasons we will make some items in Peru.
