You’ve gotta have heart

Like Denise said, the Fall 2012 line was not a bucket of roses. Is that an expression? Eh, regardless it wasn’t a piece of cake! Ha, I KNOW that’s one.

It was a lot of “Denise, we leave for China in 3 weeks, can we please start Fall?” “Denise, we leave in a week, can we please PLEASE start working on Fall?!”

And then, like she said, it was almost completed in one sleepless night. Of course I was happy about this, but totally and completely jealous. We went over the line, added a few pieces, adjusted more…but it didn’t feel..like it was mine. And You&Me? And Serendipity? Omg they were my babies. Hers too, but you know there’s always going to be something special about my first Fall and first Spring collection. Ya know? Like, your first kids are always your favorite or something (DENISE HA!).

Well, I’m proud to say that my tune has definitely changed since last September. Character Counts (yes that’s the name!) is everything I could have hope for, if not more! It’s eclectic, whimsical, and as always, a wee bit cheeky. And I believe it is a true reflection of what Denise and I believe in–having character, sticking with your gut, being yourself. Not to mention, it’s totally like peeking inside of our crazy, always moving, almost never remembering, brains. I love crap. Did you know that? If you walked into my house you might think an 80 year old woman lives there due to all the nick nacks, colored glass, and vintage furniture. There is so much great stuff in Character Counts, just like all the good crap I collect!

I can’t wait to see your girls being themselves in Character Counts. I want to see the goofy photos of the class clown, the serene photos of the shy gals, and the radiant photos of the girls that can’t help but steal the show. I want to see it all. It’s the stuff that is unique about us that gives us true character, don’t you think? And there is just something about CC that embraces that.

I know, I talk about our collections like they have a heart and soul of their own. But to me, they do. I hope you feel the heart of Character Counts, but more so I hope your darling girls do. Because when you’re proud to be who you are, proud to wear something just as wonderfully unique as yourself, I think you hold your head up a tad higher.

And I know it’s been a long time since I’ve blogged, but trust me all the busy stuff keeping me away is good. Real good.

And as always,

LOVE,

SAM

beautifully written post Sam. This blog is not only about the fall launch and your journey but it speaks volumes to me on how I would like my little girl to be raised. You eloquently discussed some of the values I hope my daughter learns throughout the years. Thanks for making clothes that truly come from the heart. That is what makes MJ so special. It is not about the unique clothing but the unique INDIVIDUAL personalities blossoming in them!!

So far I absolutely adore everything I am seeing! Can not wait for the wood grain & the vines!!

This collection reminds me of late summer/early fall, in my little childhood cabin at the lake. Mushroom hunting, building forts, fires in the fireplace.

Pretty sure you shot these lovely pictures in the Bay View woods. Right? I was just in there with my dog this morning, enjoying the serenity. What a PERFECT spot for Matilda Jane!

Hey Sam! Can’t wait to see Character Counts! Love the sneak peaks so far. Can’t believe fall is right around the corner. And don’t feel too bad, I love Vintage “crap” too! I would have a lot more myself if my husband would let me. Love, love going to antique stores. You never know what you might run into. Looking forward to seeing more sneak peaks!

Oh, I love the expression “bucket of roses” (or “not a bucket of roses” in this case)!! I put it right up there with “flying monkeys in my stomach” … I never think butterflies any more … it’s flying monkeys! Piece of cake will be a bucket of roses! Sam-isms!

This is why I love following MJ. It gets to the heart of what childhood should be. Teaching character, loyalty, creativity, respect, thoughtfulness, fortitude, originality, is our job as parents. Dressing our little girls is the fun part. Thanks for being a part of the journey
