These are the folk who pushed me to open up Matilda Jane into home parties. The gals and guys who had my back from the get go. And for them, I am pleased to return to my roots and offer Matilda Jane Platinum, an ever changing collection of art fair goods.”
Walking around the park with my books blastin’ in my ears I was sidetracked. All the great Platinum pieces I had been working on the last few nights fluttered around in my head. I thought it was about time I blogged some Platinum ramblings. It seems Platinum is a mystery to many, well, the many who do know about it. We barely mention Platinum, except on the FB page and every once in a while here, but it is never advertised nor marketed by any means. Ha, which is good cuz we can never seem to make enough of it. Which leads to a great question asked by many, “Why don’t you make more so we can all have it?”
This question seems to lead a few to frustration, which I understand fully but I also understand, and hope you will, that Platinum is my baby. It is me, it is the one little part of Matilda Jane that is the truest to it’s core. It is made in very limited quantities, maybe 5-30 of a style. Ya, I could cut a lot more, but that would put me in a place that I don’t want to be. I don’t love spending 40+ hours a week, making the same things every day. It gets quite tiresome and draining. I relish those hours that I can sneak into 435 on a Friday night and make 2-3 different dresses. Creating is what makes me the happiest.
When we started Trunk Shows 5 years back it was beyond my wildest dreams that it could lead to what it is today. It is so fun to spend that week or so dreaming up collections for upcoming seasons and watching it come to life. But yet, my life gets a tad boring once the line is drawn up. I am the type that cannot turn my mind off. It is in a constant spin mode and Platinum has let me fill those months between designing the Trunk Show lines.
Sometimes I feel bad that I cannot make enough to keep it stocked all the time. Yet, at the end of the day, I know there is a balance. There is family, friends, work, life and even me! And same as life there is no rhyme or reason to what we make, the sizes in what we make or the days we choose to upload. It is all about what happens that day, that moment.

Bought my granddaughter her first Matilda Jane today at paisley pineapple. She was so excited.
nice post
Oh do we LOVE our Platinum!! Your creations are bundles of cuteness & we wear them proudly
. Thank you for your talent..because lady…you are EXTREMELY talented! It amazes me every time how you just make certain fabrics work.
Keep on keepin’ on! I am just glad when I can catch “it” and know if I don’t… maybe I will the next time!! I totally get Plat and love it!!
I LoVE platinum and I LoVE that it is made in Fort Wayne, USA!!!!
Sweet ramblings … it’s good to take a stroll down Memory Lane every once in a while … you should always remember where you came from … how you got to where you are today … especially if you need a compass to figure out where you’re going! I’d say you’re doing it just right! I am still so sad I missed the Art Fair (death in the fam), but I will get there …
I love platinum!! I love stalking it. I love waiting for the shipping confirmation email and i love watching my little love each piece as she does the first! MORE PINKS AND PURPLES!!! =)
I love platinum and love that it is made in the USA!!! Love love!
I LOVE that there are limited amountsof all of your beautiful clothes…it’s what fuels the anticipation of new lines and Platinum. It makes everything unique and adds a quality to the clothes that I love. Thanks for always sharing with us!!
Don’t change a thing, except an occasional size 10 or 12 on platinum:)) PLEASE!
Heck I love platinum and have never even got anything from it…..I will though, never giving up
Well said. I am newer to MJ and LOVE the creations you design for Platinum. I know I can’t own everything, don’t have the money or the time to stalk, so I treasure each piece I have been lucky enough to get. Please keep making more and don’t listen to the people who complain. I get that you are a designer and this is what you do!
That is what makes platinum so special. If you made more of platinum or made it more often, wouldn’t it then just be like any other MJ collection that you can purchase online or from a TK everyday. I like the “mystery” of it. I love that it is a very limited quantity. I like that it is specially made for my child. I love MJ and plan to be a supporter for as long as MJ is sewing!
Thanks for sharing your heart!
I first met you and fell in love with Matilda Jane at the Broad Ripple Art Fair! I didn’t have any little girls at the time, but was so drawn to your work that I would purchase little hats and peasant tops for my girlfriends with new baby girls. I now have an almost 3 year old with a growing collection of Matilda Jane of her own, but it’s always the Platinum pieces that are slightly different then the rest that I cherish and dress her in when we want to feel extra special. We were even at a local festival last night and my husband was standing in line with her for the ring toss when a lady came blazing through the crowd to talk to them..she’s a MJ trunk keeper and spotted her in her MJ pants a mile away! Keep being creative, keep dreaming up new designs, and keep being amazing! XO!
I love platinum sooooooo much! I love your main lines too(Westside, gypsy blue, Hammond bay, field trip, Homeroom and you and me), but the “artsiness” of Platinum always pulls me in! You are super talented and inspiring, Denise! Every little detail down to the extra little ruffles and buttons, of course are so gorgeous! Thanks for making it special!
i LOVE this post. i’ve never managed to score a coveted piece, but i love that it’s randomly uploaded. and love that it’s made in tiny batches.
the thrill of the chase adds to it’s beauty.
I totally get it, and I applaud you doing what you love, just as you love it. What I HATE is that people have found a way to game the system, so that the same core group of ladies always grab everything up, and then hold it hostage to trade for what they need. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of these are sweet ladies. And some will actually resell at good prices. I just wish it could be absolutely random… so if you happened to be there at the right time, you could shop for the size you need. And only buy if you could actually use. But, I’m dreaming. We are far too advanced technologically, I suppose. And the reality of supply and demand is that some will always view this as a way to make money. Oh well… (rant over)
I love that platinum items are limited, makes them even more special and I feel like I won the lottery IF I get something in my cart
. And I agree, it would be nice to get some size 10 & 12. I’m still squeezing G in some 8′s, but she’s starting to look a bit like a kid in clothes that are too small, lol.
The Art Fair stuff has always been my favorite, even all those years ago when Matilda Jane was a small company. I love Platinum even though I don’t have the chance to get it very much anymore.
here are a couple of platinum stories from just yesterday…my daughter was wearing a knot dress i was lucky enough to score from platinum months ago (name of it i cannot recall but it has the puppy fabric on the apron; polka dot ribbon in earthy tones around the bottom and other beautiful patterns mixed on the knot straps, etc)…
she wore this to my son’s bday party and two other mjc mommas were there and both said (independent of each other/different times)…”wow, love madelyn’s dress!” “what is it? I’ve never seen that one before!” I said, “Its platinum, was lucky enough to score it one day!” AND later in the day, daughter and i headed to vonmaur (best gift dept ever, by the way, ladies!) — needed to pick up bday gifts for friends. the lady who works in the gift dept (who sees us all the time-has watched my daughter grow up since she was an infant)…this lady is classy, a grandmother and i respect her for more reasons than i can list here…we always have great conversations and have for 5+ years. POINT…Madelyn, still wearing the same platinum dress….the associate says to me…quote “I love that Miss Madelyn is always dressed so sweet the way little should be, the way I think all little girls should look.” I just thanked her but just beamed inside—THATS why I love MJC and THATS what I love about platinum. I check the platinum site here and there and once and a while I score her something unique or a MA tee for my sweet “SON-shine! (my son!). its totally random the items are totally unique and always perfection. I wouldn’t appreciate the few platinum items I have nearly as much if it were mass-produced and everyone else wore it! In the meantime, I’ll check here and there and maybe score a delicious lovely for one of my kiddos…and if I don’t…well, at the end of the day, I have two gorgeous kids who would look precious in a potato sack …(adorned with an mjc label, maybe!) . xo (ps sorry so long of a comment!) xo
Oh, I am a VonMaur fan!!!
Stay true to you! Love platinum and love the seasonal lines. Platinum wouldn’t be so special if it wasn’t like stumbling upon a rare and beautiful treasure. Don’t change a thing.
I love your clothes, it warms my heart to see my daughter wearing them but please, please, please try & make this line more TTS! Things seem to run so big and my daughter is petite! The 12M pants won’t fit her until she’s 2 I’m afraid
other than that I love it all! Hugs
