SO Thankful

I love when the good things land on Wednesday, makes it super easy to write about something. My personal life is kinda boring so I really rely on the girls here for some blogging material.

Well today was the perfect blogging day. We had lots of laughter and even some tears. They were happy tears of course but none the less, today was super emotional.

Lets say the day started as any other Wednesday does. WIG WEDNESDAY! This week Cindy got to join in on the tradition. That alone made today 10 times better.

Secondly, Denise and David treated us to Subway and extended our lunch break 30 extra minutes. YAY!

And then to top the whole day off, Lynette presented Chelsa with the commissions check from the Trunk Keepers Sweetest Day Promotion.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this event. Chelsa was very moved by the generosity and there wasnt a dry eye in the room when she realized the amount you all helped raise for her family.

Thanksgiving is a favorite around here for this very reason. It’s  a day to give thanks for everything we have been blessed with, and if anyone knows what it feels like to be blessed its us.

Is there any other work place were some of your best friends are girls you work with everyday. We share our exciting news and we share our sad news, but at the end of the day we know we have someone to share it with.

SO thankful for friendship.

Speaking of friendship, I have to get up early tomorrow. My friend Helen and I are heading to her friends church to help cook and serve a meal to families who may not get one. I am SUPER excited about this because it is something I have been wanting to do and have not done it. I am thinking of making it a tradition even when I have a family of my own.

What are some of your tradition? I loved to hear some. There may even be something in it for you. hint hint!

Have a wonderful night and have VERY VERY

THANKFUL THANKSGIVING

XOXO

Kayla

Jessica Kruger - November 21, 2012 - 10:37 pm

Happy Thanksgiving to you all. The only tradition we really have on Thanksgiving is to just make sure we’re enjoying the day with family. That’s what it’s all about. All the yummy food is just a bonus ;) .

Thanksgiving changes each year for us, family moving, never sure of our $ or travel abilities, but we are always together, Dave and I for 12 years, and now our wonderful kids. Our main tradition is teaching the children exactly what it is to give thanks and do something, even small, for another person. My friend has to work security at our mall tomorrow all alone and Aiden, Ady, and I are going to bring her some pie and a smile to cheer her up.

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is when we all go around to say what we are thankful for. It is great to hear especially from the kids what they thank God for in their lives. Being that they all began their lives in third world countries (2 from Ethiopia and 1 from Haiti), their perspective on Thanks is so different. As we prepare for our new addition to arrive soon from Haiti, we have yet another blessing to be thankful for!

Besides food, football and “normal stuff” a long standing tradition is making my Granny’s fruit salad together. She passed away when I was 13, but I sure cant imagine a Holiday without it! A new tradition with my kiddos is homemade “what we are thankful for” napkin rings… Love this time of year and positive smiles all day long! :)

Shanna - November 21, 2012 - 10:43 pm

Our tradition is that we do a turducken, not a turkey, for dinner. It’s a chicken, stuffed inside of a duck, stuffed inside a turkey. We’ve been doing it for 13 years :)

khara - November 21, 2012 - 10:44 pm

It is our family’s tradition to all gather at my grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving. We have a pretty small family but most are spread out all over so it’s always nice for everyone to get together in the same place at the same time and enjoy our time together.

Stacie Petta - November 21, 2012 - 10:47 pm

It is our tradition for us to host the Thanksgiving meal at our house. My parents & inlaws both join in the fun. We also have the tradition of lighting a candle at the dinner table while saying what we are thankful for. I threw in a fun turkey hat last year to also wear when speaking. It gets some good laughs! Happy Thanksgiving!!

Mary C - November 21, 2012 - 10:47 pm

We started a new one this year. We hung a poster in the kitchen with a picture of our family in the middle that says “Our family is thankful for….” then we wrote new things on it every day that we are thankful for (starting Nov. 1, leading up to Thanksgiving). My four year old loved it, and it was a great opportunity to remind her about all the blessings in our lives.

Dawn - November 21, 2012 - 10:53 pm

Our favorite tradition is having “Elfie” show up on Thanksgiving night! Olivia gets to bed early and wakes up super happy for the whole month, the anticipation of knowing what silly elf has done during the night kills her!!! It is so much fun:)

I love the holidays because of time with family. We are so blessed! We spend Thanksgiving Day at my childhood home with extended family. It’s great to see my kids with great-grandparents! Then the next day we stay in jammies and put up all the Christmas decorations.

Jaydee - November 21, 2012 - 10:58 pm

Our tradition was the simple wishbone. My sister and I usually had to wait at least a day until it was dry enough for a clean break. Then it was always a big deal, at least for that second, when one of us got the bigger half. Now that I have two of my own, maybe it will become one of their holiday memories.

Heather D. - November 21, 2012 - 11:01 pm

A tradition that my husband and I share is to save a dry the wishbone off the turkey. Once its dry we split the wishbone making wishes for each other!

Our traditions…..Well, most years we travel about an hour away to celebrate Thanksgiving with my husband’s family. On our return trip we enjoy stopping at the local Christmas tree farm to pick out our tree as a family. I greatly enjoy that time, wandering around outdoors, judging the merits of this tree and that, and deciding together which one will make the cut. (No pun intended.) One year our Christmas card pic was from that trip:) On my side of the family our tradition is pretty much no tradition, except to maneuver our gathering so that my younger cousin is able to attend. His father was tragically killed when he was young, then his mother not too many year after of a heart attack (heart break, we really think). He had no choice but to be uprooted and moved MANY hours away to live with predetermined relatives. So Thanksgiving for us is about being reunited together and valuing what we have in the present.

One of our traditions is to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I always watched it with my mom growing up, so now I love to watch it with my kids!

Michelle clouse - November 21, 2012 - 11:13 pm

Every year I am just asked to bring the appetizers to thanksgiving dinner, I really can cook. So, my daughter and I spend the night before making a fun themed dessert. Last year were turkey cupcakes, this year nutter butter acorns. This year we made thankful turkeys out of pumpkins. I think this will be come a tradition. It was fun to see what my daughter was thankful for and what she thought her baby brother was thankful for.

Jennifer Valsted - November 21, 2012 - 11:20 pm

Our Thanksgiving tradition starts our day off with watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the kids. I have been watching this since I was a child and now to be 42 and watch it with my kids is super special to me. It is a bittersweet tradition for us this year as my Dad passed away six weeks ago rather unexpectedly. He was the one who watched the parade every year with me when I was little and then would always call my kids during the parade now to wish them a Happy Thanksgiving and see what they liked about the parade. It was just a wonderful way to start our day and enjoy relaxing family time. I am very sad that this will be the first parade he will miss and that we won’t be able to receive his call, but am truly thankful that he started this tradition and we will carry it on in his memory. Happy Thanksgiving Matilda Jane!!!!

Abby - November 21, 2012 - 11:47 pm

I love getting up and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on TV with my kiddos, just like my mom did with me growing up, while I make my grandma’s “special” green bean recipe to take to our family’s Thanksgiving meal later that day! Always a great morning!!

Ericka Ruckh - November 22, 2012 - 12:06 am

Amazing to spend your thanksgiving helping others that may otherwise go without. I am working tomorrow. I’m an ER nurse and I actually love working the holiday’s. People are so very thankfull that I am there on that day. There is ALWAYS a critical pt that comes in that we help. And others we cannot. For me, it brings the perspective of the true meaning of thanksgiving for me. And while yes my family and children will be missing me, I will be there to make a difference for someone else!

lori Phillips - November 22, 2012 - 12:32 am

Our favorite thanksgiving tradition is making my late Mom’s delicious macarono and cheese, and sharing sweet and fun memories of her as we enjoy it as part of out Thanksgiving meal!

My husband is from a family of boys. We had 8 nephews and 1 niece (ages 19-32)till my daughter was born. Their family tradition is to play a game of football before eating the Thanksgiving meal. It’s been so fun to watch these mad boys let my almost 4 year old daughter join in their wild game of football. And she loves it!

Every year, right before Thanksgiving, my husband and I take our three children to visit the NICU where they each spent more than their first two months of life. It was a long tough road for my identical twin boys and then my sweet little girl who even had to be resuscitated at birth. The NICU staff gives up time with their own families to take care of others’ most precious gifts and for that we are forever grateful. We love to show them how much our three have grown and our appreciation. We don’t take a second with our children for granted. We are truly thankful and very, very blessed.

Katelyn McDermott - November 22, 2012 - 2:11 am

This blog post moved ME to tears, so I can’t imagine what you ladies were all going through!! Our family tradition is playing a HUGE family football game every year. The “McDermott Bowl” The youngest grandchildren to the oldest uncles play and everyone in between. So much fun:)

Traditions are funny sometimes. It seems like alot of our greatest traditions happen by chance. We do something fun or inspiring together and we love it so much it becomes this “thing we have to do again”. I love that. We went camping a few years ago with two other families and we had so much fun we made it a tradition we had to do every summer..to this day we still make sure to plan our camping trips. One of the best parts is when all the kids are asleep and we hang around the campfire laughing and eating ourself sick with treats. It’s just fun!

Wendy McVay - November 22, 2012 - 4:58 am

One of the kids always says grace, very interesting to hear what they are thankful for!

Adrienne - November 22, 2012 - 5:47 am

We always visit with my husband’s family on Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas. There are at least 40 people there, and I love that our kids get to know their second cousins, great-aunts and great-uncles, etc. It’s so fun to be part of such a large family and actually know them all!

Erica S - November 23, 2012 - 12:22 pm

Growing up our Thanksgiving tradition was always a healthy, yet VERY competitive, game of Rook. We have continued the tradition by playing it with our kids. We have a little family game night (including our version of rook since our daughter isn’t quite old enough to understand it yet). We talk about what we are thankful for and at the end of the night, our kids go through their games and chooss the games they no longer play and we donate them to the women/children shelter on Black Friday. Our son enjoys giving to others around the holidays (and making room for things he will enjoy).

Lauren - November 23, 2012 - 4:09 pm

Our tradition is from smallest to biggest we take the time before dinner to share what we are most thankful for this year. And no matter it be something little like my nephews toy trains or something big like beating a sickness – they are all so important. I love it as we take a moment to reflect

Kaatje Pitzer - November 23, 2012 - 4:13 pm

Our Thanksgiving tradition is to bring both sides of the family together for one big meal together at our house. I cook everything & we enjoy wonderful time together! The kids love having all their grandparents & great grandparents together! This year was a little bitter sweet as the first without my dad after his death. We left an empty chair at the table in his honor!

Natty - November 23, 2012 - 4:23 pm

As a Canadian, our Thanksgiving is a different day, but the traditions remain close to the same. Our tradition that my best bud and I do every year, is how we give back to our community. We start prepping just after we get back from our summer holiday, knitting scarves and hats. We go out to our local mission house and deliver them to a the folks who are sitting outside in the cold. Whatever is left we leave at the mission house for others to use. This year we taught my daughter how to knit. She’s not quite there yet, but she loves the idea of getting to help us out, and choosing the fun yarns to knit with. <3

I am big on tradition and our meal is usually very similar each year – every family member contributes a dish (which makes it easier on the hostess!) and the chaos of having 20 laughing people fill my kitchen and dining room – toddlers and all – gives me the warmest feeling. My favourite tradition is that I use my great-grandmother Sadie’s turkey pan that is so battered but still serves the purpose. My daughter is named after her so it’s kind of neat!

My family celebrates Thanksgiving in Kentucky with my Grandmother. It is so nice to get the whole family together. I always go shopping on Friday alone because my family does not enjoy the crowd.

carolynb - November 25, 2012 - 5:24 pm

thanksgiving is over but how about this tradition….trying to stay in your pj’s for the whole weekend….so don’t want to get dressed tomorrow :)

DanaOh - November 26, 2012 - 7:06 pm

Besides cutting down our family Christmas tree every Saturday after Turkey day, my favorite tradition is definitely door bell ditching care packages on the door step of a family in need. We’d fill a huge basket with fixings for a feast and always colorful fruits filling in the gaps. Then wrapped gifts for each family member. The pile sitting on the porch was enchanting!!! As soon as we rang the doorbell, we would run as fast as we could to hide behind a bush and watch for them to open the door and see their faces light up with pure joy! My favorite part! Sometimes we’d have to run back to the car and hide with the headlights off until the all clear to drive away into the night. SO. MUCH. FUN!!! I would do this every day if I could. It never gets old. xoxo
