Speaking Volumes

You can ask anyone, I am not a talker. Ok, I am if I am nervous or if it something I am super passionate about but other than that, nope..nadda much here!  So when Joe brought home a slip of paper today and told me he wanted to join the Speech Club I was a tad confused, Though David is a great speaker and I admit, Joe loves attention.  But I gotta tell you, I am beyond nervous about this.  And I feel bad admitting it, but it’s life.  I am so worried kids are going to make fun of him. I mean he is going to be on stage speaking, competing in Speech. Kids are hard on each other.

Or maybe I need to ask myself, “Am I too hard on Joe?”  I try so hard not to be protective of him and let him explore any option with the attitude ” Absolutely, you can do this.”  It’s so scary sometimes.  Yup, I’ve said it before and you’ve all agreed, “It is so hard being a mom.”

Speaking of speaking….I’ve gotta share a quick story with you. You see these gorgeous gals, (Alicia, Chelsa, Kayla and Sarah) all dressed in pink? Well, one if them is an amazing speaker also.  I was trying to explain to Joe how public speaking is often difficult for most people unless they are talking about something they are passionate about, something they know a lot about or really just share.  I instantly thought about Chelsa and a recent story she told about Cancer Services of Fort Wayne. You can read Chelsa’s story here.  But even better you can see what an amazing speaker she is below!!!

Well, of course you are nervous … but you should just be oh-so-proud that your amazing boy has this image of himself being part of the Speech Club! This is the kind of thing you have been working on … he got it, Mom!! Talk to the teacher or sponsor and figure out how it’s going to go down! Share your concerns. Oh, you should send or take some yummy snacks for their meeting -kids love yummy snacks … they will know they came from Joe!

I love that Joe wants to do speech. I was always terrified of public speaking. I love this quote: “The only things that stand between a person and what they want in life are the will to try it and the faith to belive it’s possible.” What an amazing and brave little man you have! He will be quite the charmer up there on stage and I bet he will be great! And Chelsa – wow, what an amazing and strong woman she must be. She is in my prayers!

<3 She's pretty darn awesome and I'm totally not biased! ;) As for Joe, he will do great things. Public speaking is so good for kids and it will prepare him well for the future.

Hi Denise – I have been a follower and fan of MJC for many years…In my professional career I helped coach and train many people with public speaking or as we like to call it…”speech fitness”. It is all about self-confidence and letting Joe find his own groove. Truly ANYONE can do it. It may be Joe’s gift that he is just waiting to share with others…:) If anything, he will have fun!

I think that it’s normal for you to be concerned when Joe tries new things. I know that I’m always nervous when my kids try something new whether it’s cheer, soccer, gymnastics, choir, violin, or basically anything new. I think it’s because we love them so much! Who knows, maybe this speech club will be the beginning of a life filled with public speaking.
As for your family, I think they’re pretty amazing! It takes so much courage to speak out as Chelsea has. She is filled with happiness!

I think it’s awesome your son wants to join the speech club! I was a super shy kiddo, and didn’t even speak during all of 1st grade in class. But in 2nd grade, I started a new school, and I got comfortable. Eventually, even though I was still rather shy, I joined the speech team and I LOVED it. It was so much fun and the teacher who ran the program is amazing (she’s one of my best friend’s moms). I have such fond memories of it and it was a real confidence booster for me. Hope your son has the same experience! FWIW, I went on to law school and I’m pretty sure that even though I SAH w/ my kids now, I could get up in front of a courtroom and judge no problem – definitely credit speech team/club for part of that! :)

I think it is awesome that he wants to do Speech Club. I really think other kids in the club would be supportive and helpful.

Beautiful Beautiful Lady! My mom is a breast cancer survivor and I am a avid suporter of breast cancer awareness. I also am city coordinator for Brides Against Breast Cancer in my area. Everyone knows someone affected by breast cancer. Thinking of you.
